Oh. I was hoping for a new cast that would make us all go "wow!" when the Queens - oh, sorry, Sondheim, reopens. You would think they would do something a bit special to launch the refurb - but as it's Les Mis, I don't suppose they need to.

Could be mistaken, but is this cast slightly older? Not many straight out of drama school.

Conspiracy theory: Rob Houchen or an understudy to play Marius until end of Jan and then Jac Yarrow comes in after panto. (I literally have absolutely no grounds to this theory)
Also I hope Kelly Agbowu is understudy Mme Thenardier!

Tbh that’s some very good casting imo, might just have to get a ticket now. Interesting that they didn’t mention any Marius though...

Exciting new cast - random to announce on a saturday night but nvm. Particularly looking forward to Jon Robyns as JVJ (having previously played both Marius and Enjolras!).

Excited to see that Luke McCall is alternate Valjean, I loved his Enjolras. The whole cast is rather impressive. I agree with LaLuPone - my first thought after seeing Joseph was that Yarrow is a sure bet for Marius, and it seems that this time they’ve gone for a young Eponine/Cosette and slightly older Enjorlas et al. so I think Jac would fit the part age-wise too. I saw a press release somewhere that said that Cam Mac is ‘still searching’ for Marius so that could mean anything.

Mainly excited about the gorgeous Ashley Gilmour who I loved in Miss Saigon tour. Bradley Jaden I loved as Javert (though I have never seen so much saliva in my life - avoid the first 5 rows!)
Did like Jon Robyns as Enjolras in the 25th tour but just dunno if he has the gravitas for JVJ. Though assume he does, otherwise they wouldn't have cast him! We'll see.
Anyway, always excited by Les Mis news :-)

the search for Marius this year feels like the search for Enjolras last year, when it took some time to get him announced too

So I can't afford to see all the shows I'd like to see once and have been happily ignoring Les Mis as one I've already seen three times so no need to bother - then they go and cast Josefina Gabrielle! It's back on the to see list now with that.

Not surprised at Carrie getting Fantine for the new version or that a few of the tour cast are coming in.
I’m happy to see Richard Carson in this, especially as 1st cover Javert. I saw him as Fiyero on the Wicked tour when he was an understudy for the role and also as Chris on the Miss Saigon tour and loved him each time.

Jon Robyns seems very young to be JVJ but I guess they’ll olden him up.
Glad Bradley is staying on - he is amazing and so hot lol!

Anyone else feel like it might be nice to start a new thread for the new production at the Sondheim, and keep this thread just for and about the original production?

Happy to see what people think about that, but just to say that it would then be four threads about the same show. Also I think it’s inevitable that when the new production opens people will want to discuss it with a lot of reference to the original. We already have a bit of crossover (example: the new cast is being discussed in two threads at the moment) and I think another thread might make that worse.

I vote keep this thread for the staged London productions at The Queens and The Sondheim, as you say 4 threads would be a lot and there will be crossover anyway in this one!

On the subject of whether or not Les Mis should still be called "the world's longest running musical", this actually is actually inaccurate. Technically, the world's longest running musical is actually 'The Fantasticks', which premiered Off-Broadway at the Sullivan Street Playhouse and ran for 42 years.
As for what the tagline should be when the new production opens, I guess maybe they can call it "The World's Most Popular Musical" or, "The World's Most Iconic Musical" or, "The Greatest Musical Of All Time" or, "The World's Most Beloved Musical"? These are just a few ideas.

These are just a few ideas. The Fantasticks added another 11 years Off-Broadway from 2006 to 2017 at what's now the Jerry Orbach Theatre, so if Les Mis wants to call itself longest-running musical despite moving theatres in London several times by now, they'll have to manage 54 years in total Though since The Fantasticks has closed at last, I think Les Mis is basically going for "The world's (currently) longest running musical" which would be accurate. The other things are... very subjective, I think. I like the show, but reading something like "The Greatest Musical of All Time" immediately makes me want to yell out "No it's not". Same with World's Most Popular, Most Beloved, etc... it's been an incredible hit in the UK, yes, but the world? What of classics that keep being revived decade after decade all over the world, whereas Les Mis may have had one run in many countries at some point, but then disappeared? Not wanting to be contrarian, just think that claims like these can easily backfire. Better to stick with what they have now.

Put me down as another one who'll be pulled back to Les Mis by this casting news after a considerable break. Jon Robyns or Josefina Gabrielle would each have gotten be back through the door on their own, will be great to get to see them both!
