Wow. The gays love their dra-maaaa!!! With all their wealth and intellectual snobbery, did any of these characters consider seeing a therapist?
Yes, this is a great production of a marvelously written and superbly acted play. I enjoyed it but also hated it.
As a gay man in my late 30s, brown, able to reconcile and negotiate multi-cultures, having grown up only seeing one prototype of gayness on stage and beyond, I’m surprised that THESE are the men that are supposedly representative of Gay Life in 2018? The gay narrative has always been about white males and their suffering, and this is addressed for a moment, but the play keeps on perpetuating this reality. This becomes especially troubling when the writer himself is a POC, but all his characters in which he has written himself into are so swamped in their whiteness.
Great show. Great writing, but who needs this? Oh, wait. Of course..

Saw part 2 for the 4th time recently. A couple of rows in front of me (in the premium stalls seats) was a family with 2 girls who couldn’t have been older than 6 or 7 years old. They managed to last a lot longer than I was expecting, up until a scene around 30/45 minutes in with especially colourful sexual language, when they were swiftly hurried out by concerned looking parents. How can people be so oblivious? Surely they would have been told on entry it wouldn’t be suitable for kids that young? Dare I hazard a guess that there have been a certain amount of comps available for this show recently and some people will just grab tickets looking for a cheap night out. And (at least where I've seen these advertised), the information about exactly what the play is about isn't too revealing.
But yes, the ushers should certainly have said something, but by the same token it's not the easiest subject to broach if the family have got all the way to the seats. And I've reactions where certain types of liberal parents always know what's best for their children.
Presumably they also hadn't seen part one, which would make this one rather difficult for young children to follow, regardless of the content?
Stupid parents. It’s their job to do some research about what the play is about before taking kids that young. I despair at the stupidity. The poster hardly screams family show. |

Having seen this at the YV early in the run I find it amazing People think the characters are “real” Fortunately I don’t know any such disturbed arrogant or self indulgent people As those portrayed in this play Mainly all stereotypes who need a slap round the face And am glad of it The lack of self awareness here is DELICIOUS!! There’s a crazy queue for ticket collection today - stretching all the way up to Great Newport Street! Never seen anything like it, it seems almost the whole audience has opted for collection today.

It was like that the other day when I went - I think it was a combination of papering and also TodayTix sales which are all collection only.

Has anyone seen this out of order?
I'd really like to get to see it before it closes but only way I could is by seeing part 2 one evening then part 1 the following evening. It says on their website can see either part but also that the plot follows chronologically. I'd be grateful for any thoughts

I've not seen it out of order but if you're willing to read a synopsis of Part 1 just so you're not blindsided all together by Part 2, then it's better to see it out of order than not at all, and honestly I think Part 1 is better anyway so there's ultimately no harm in leaving the theatre on a bit of a high. It does sort of suck that you would have to spoil yourself for Part 1 so you can actually get what's going on in Part 2, and it does sort of suck that the dramatic tensions of Part 1 would be lessened because you already know what's going to happen in Part 2, but we all know how Hamlet ends and keep buying tickets anyway, so as long as you're all about the journey rather than the destination (and I think you're open to these downsides or you wouldn't be considering seeing them out of order at all) then there's no reason not to do it.

Saw part 2 last night, and enjoyed it far more than the first time around! Even went and fangirled at stage door to tell the cast how much I loved it, and a couple of them mentioned both that they’d done lots of work on it (which makes me wonder what exactly they have changed - can anyone with a better memory than me recall differences with the Young Vic version?) and that there’s lots more work to do!
Have we already had confirmation of a Broadway transfer?
(I loved it so much last night, I actually bought a mug! And I can count on one hand the number of shows I’ve bought actual merch for...)

Has anyone got rush tickets lately? I might see it tomorrow if can get one but I also want to try for BOOH matinee so will have to choose the one I think will go quickest!

I got rush tickets for both parts on Saturday. You need to be quick though - they're gone in a blink of an eye.

I got rush tickets for both parts on Saturday. You need to be quick though - they're gone in a blink of an eye. If you try for rush tickets on a two show day and are lucky for part 1, do you also get a ticket for part 2? Sorry, I think this has already been asked. |
