"In recent years the Crucible has become known for its highly regarded Christmas musical, this year Paul Foster (Tell Me On a Sunday - Tour) will direct Anna-Jane Casey (Mack and Mabel - Chichester Festival Theatre) as Annie Oakley in Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun. With choreography by Crucible favourite Alistair David (Show Boat - Crucible), the Wild West musical will run from 8 December - 14 January" - WoS

Just a bump to remind everyone tickets are on sale. I missed getting tickets on release day so had to book for my seats after press night as had same ones a lot of years running!! £20 before press night and £28 after.
Would definitely recommend crucible Christmas to anyone as honestly haven't seen a bad one yet.

I presume they are doing the revised version, that Bernadette Peters starred in?
Are Tommy and Winnie included? They often get cut.
Is the original version still available? I dont understand why shows need to be updated. These are classics! Yes some of the themes might be outdated but why cant people enjoy what the original authors intended.
Is the song 'Im An Indian Too' so offensive it has to be cut?
The original has a special place in my heart!

I caught this last night. It is in pretty good shape for the second/third preview. I haven't seen Annie Get Your Gun before and I only knew a couple of songs but I loved it. As always, Anna-Jane Casey was absolutely outstanding - she does completely carry the show. Her singing was glorious, fantastic dancing and she stayed in character the whole time. During her ballad 'In his arms' she accidentally caught part of a door that suddenly slammed on the floor but she didn't even flinch. Ben Lewis was a bit of a mix bag - he didn't really make this unlikable character that likable. Similarly, he wasn't as fanciable as Michael Xavier (I fear I have now been spoilt by him!!). His singing was lovely though. Ensemble was very strong and the dance numbers were perfect. I would highly recommend a visit to Sheffield.
On a side note, the theatre's air con had broken last night and it was terribly hot and uncomfortable and the lighting was poor. They struggled to find any of the actors on stage! That being said it is a preview and I imagine that will be ironed out quickly.

They were ok, but their vocals were a little shaky at times. I'm An Indian Too was not included. |

Next week looking to do a very small theatre tour of the North.
I intend to see Sweet Charity and Billy Elliot in Manchester then Strictly Ballroom in Leeds then This in Sheffield.
There are extra matinees next week.

Just back from a day return jaunt from Surrey to Sheffield to catch the matinee and very pleased I did. It began a little painfully with Ben Lewis singing 'There's no business' acapella but when the orchestra came in he was in the wrong key! After that, though, I thought he was really excellent in a difficult role to pull off (so much better than Jason Donovan from a year or two back.) Dominating everything though was Anna-Jane Casey - she really is the complete pro - fab voice, dancing and acting and her diction is also superb when singing (in fact, for once, the words were really clear from all performers in the songs.) It's great to see her in a starring role, she's too good to be just tapping your troubles away in 'Mack and Mabel'

There was just something missing for me though, I can't quite put my finger on it. The stage is absolutely vast, it's huge anyway at the crucible but the backdrop was so far back it was almost out on the dual carriageway outside. So there was this big expanse of stage and I didn't think the sets filled it sufficiently. Apart from an ingenious train created on the revolve I was really underwhelmed. I actually thought the design on the Jason Donovan touring version a couple of years ago was better. There are a couple of lovely set pieces, the Ballroom scene with the waiters and waitresses being one of them but it was all just a bit flat. Perhaps I wasn't in the mood.  |

I agree the set was underwhelming, with everything set at the back and too much empty space at the front but for me the charisma of AJC and the chemistry between her and Ben Lewis made up for that.

No, not as good as Showboat (which was exceptional) but the Christmas musical at the Crucible is never less than excellent and this is well worth a visit, even if you live 180 miles away as I do.
