42nd Street again here. I saw it with friends, then took my mum for her birthday, then she loved it so much she took her sisters for their birthday. Then we went again with my brother. I definitely take after my mum with the need to see things multiple times when I fall in love with them. Tears of joy each time.
The Toxic Avenger - a complete delight of a surprise.
Hamilton - Just because I'd spend literally all year anticipating it and it did not disappoint. I hate to be a cliche but yes, still obsessed with the cast recording.

I don't think I can choose a highlight. I got to see several shows for the first time (Annie, 42nd Street, An American in Paris, Aladdin, Hamilton, Nativity!, Addams Family, Young Frankenstein & Rent thought I've seen amateur productions of some of them)
I think if I had to choose a highlight it would be Jesus Christ Superstar at Regents Park as its a show I love already and was such a great production

Great Comet - it makes me indescribably sad that I'm probably never going to see this show on the same scale ever again. Still hoping for a smaller production.
Also loved Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf and Ink this year.

And Starlight Express at The Other Palace was also wonderful. Oh me too. The sight of Mica Paris crawling along the back of the stage looking for a paracetamol was one of the theatre joys of last year. Otherwise it was Hello, Dolly!. I was so excited, I think I peed a little bit. A lot. |

42nd Street and Hamilton for me - the former because it's just joyous, the latter because I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would and it managed to live up to the hype.
Also Angels in America on the play side.

I’ve had to go back through my 2017 diary to check what I saw last year... It’s amazing how quickly you can forget some evenings in the theatre (Peter Pan at the NT for example).
In the musicals category it would have to be Fiddler on the Roof in Chichester. Fantastic production in all respects.
In the play category it’s a joint first place: The Ferryman. Outstanding play, brilliantly acted. And the Old Vic’s A Christmas Carol. A stunning experience, deeply moving...
I can’t see me ever forgetting these three.

It can be a bit of a hard sell when you tell your theatre buddies that they should trek down to London at considerable expense to see an 80 year old musical. But when you look at their faces at the end and they give you a hug and say “thank you”.... that’s a good feeling.

Best: Follies and Angels in America
Worst: Wonderland. I love the CD but the production itself was shocking

Everything they saw was 'new', fresh and exciting that night. As if no one had ever seen it before. it's a truly marvelous producitno and a third vist can't be far away. |
