How does this theatre survive?
They haven’t had a hit in years
It’s in a awful location
I doubt most of the local populace go there
Every time the close for a refurb
They open to ever diminishing audiences
It’s just pathetic
When I have been recently it wasn’t even
40% full
If you compare to similar venues
In terms of budget pricing and capacity
Somewhere like Tricycle
Has much more profile and succcess
The Bush lives on old legacies
Nothing to shout home about under the crappy new regime

There's something a bit on the spectrum about assuming that the location of somewhere is awful because (presumably) it's inconvenient for you. Everywhere is more convenient for some people than others. I work near Euston and live in South West London so the Bush is in a great location for me. And if you meant the environment - it's London - if you don't like urban, don't go. It's profoundly stupid to go to Shepherd's Bush and complain that it's not Chichester. I always like going there - there are loads of different types of places to eat and drink, from bistros and wine bars to pubs of varying characters to cheap and cheerful to chains. Sad that the Polish place appears to have closed though.
People I know who live in the vicinity go - they get a special rate.

Its a good theatre and I enjoyed all the stuff I saw there.
What a nasty thing to say about a small theatre like that.

I live close to it. I’ve never been to it. Their programming is very narrow and they’ve never staged a single thing that looks interesting to me. I guess they’re not interested in having a properly diverse audience. I can’t think of single theatre of a similar size in London that I don’t go to occasionally.
I think the Arcola is in a worse area.

Why then Were there less than 60 people at the show today And last time I went 70 There is something awfully wrong here It’s embarrassing for the actors The audience And the venue They should get some balls Accept the venue is irrelevant And close it down Arcola Is equally always empty Haven’t been for ages Nothing interesting For years Ultimately It’s the theatre and the programming that are rubbish

You are not part of the audience they are interested in attracting. Neither am I. Their problem is their target audience is largely made up of people who don’t go to the theatre.

One of the best of the year.

I've seen 3 productions at The Bush Theatre in the last year (The Royale - at Notting Hill -, Ramona Tells Jim and Of Kith and Kin) and all 3 had some merit about them and all attracted good audiences.
Oh and you liked Of Kith and Kim and declared it "well worth seeing" and that "you was on edge" during the second act...
So the Artistic Director must be doing something right...

There isn’t a single new play venue, apart from this one, in London that doesn’t occasionally do a revival. Royal Court, Hampstead, Gate, Tricycle etc. If they wanted a diverse audience drawn from the entire local community they would be a bit less inflexible too.

The Bush Theatre is incredibly diverse in its programming. Incredibly so.
The problem is, as other venues have found out, is that you can't bring a horse to water and make it drink...

I thought the last two things I saw there - Parliament Square and Kith and Kin were really wonderful. I like the venue.

In fairness I have offered much support And been many times But it’s time to stop now This is a bit of a weird post. let me get this straight: You are not going to support a theatre because other people don't support it - even though you think it does good work (earlier up the thread you said the play was "good" but not well attended)

They're unlikely to close down so soon after a £4m refurbishment, Parsley!
In all seriousness, it used to be better. I go a couple of times a year now, but eight or ten years ago I was there all the time. Not literally. The last thing I saw there that I liked a lot was Jumpers for Goalposts. I'd guess that's three years ago, maybe longer. It's a fairly nice space, I think run with a lot of heart and good intentions, but it's no longer a new writing power house.

Oh, and when you say they haven't had a hit in years...didn't Cush Jumbo's "Josephine and I" originate at The Bush? That went on to play in the States! And the new venue only opened a couple of months ago! There's something afoot here. I don't trust the poster's motives.

I saw parliament square today
It’s beyond laughable
The worst thing I have seen this year
Utterly unbelievable
Stupidly written and poorly thought out
