Booking issue now fixed, and some seats already booked and allocated. Maybe it broke after already being on sale, or they are producer seats based on the odd positions they are booked from.
Upshot is I've booked. Should I listen to the score beforehand or will that ruin the story for me. I'm currently just assuming it's about conjoined twins.

Paul Taylor Mills produces the U.K premiere of Side Show at the Southwark Playhouse starting 21st October 2016, opening 26th October until 3rd December 2016. Thank you for the heads up on this. Just booked! (That's why I love this board... Always a great source of information.  ) |

I saw the revisal of Side Show on Boxing Day 2014 and I loved every minute of it, even if they had cut my favourite belting number, The Tunnel of Love!
I am really looking forward to seeing it in London, though a little disappointed that its being done at the SP, as I was hoping for a bigger production Still, at £14 a ticket, its a fantastic bargain.
Have they ever announced a show at the SP 9 months before it even starts?

So excited about this.
Even though the recent Broadway production was rubbish, there is no denying the glorious score.
And allocated seating AT LAST!!!

I had a look at the wiki (I know!) and this looks interesting but potentially a really sad story. I didn't read the act 2 description as I don't want to spoil it if I do go. What's the general tone of this show? Upper? Downer?

Then again, a friend who saw it for the first time ever while it was in previews on Broadway (the revival) said she appreciated it, but the whole thing was so sad since she kept feeling bad for the real twins. I think I was personally too drawn in to feel sad -- more like fascinated. |

I wonder if they're belatedly realising the power of social media + that it helps shows to sell out, or at least book heavily, well in advance even of previews. Creating that buzz must also raise the profile of the production and SP, making a transfer more likely if the show is a success, as potential venues will already be aware and perhaps discussing. Add to that the increased likelihood that people will book well in advance now that seating is allocated, and I think we will see more of these early announcements. The only snag is having to commit yourself to a date that far ahead, without knowing what else you might need to juggle nearer the time - but that's a problem for the audience members, not the theatre! |

Allocated seating should make a huge difference to advance sales, I booked both Toxic Avenger and Side Show on the respective days they've gone on sale to get my preferred vantage point. I doubt I'd have bothered with the Toxic Avenger at all without the changes to the seating policy but the venue is a lot more enticing without a long queue in the corridor to endure now! |

As a football season ticket holder/theatre lover that lives no where near London early announcements like this put me in a predicament. Often I want to book at the first instance and get carried away, as is the case with this but I need the fixtures to be released before I can commit to a Saturday! Decisions! Not sure how long my will can hold off booking for this though!

Unfortunatly my team wallow in the pits of league 2, and even that's not guaranteed right now! Otherwise I would! Early round FA cup games are usually a safe bet since we won't get past the 1st round.

I can't see another thread for Southwark P and I have a question. You have to collect tickets on the day and I believe they are unallocated. Is there usually a chaotic scrum to do this or would it be reasonable to think 30 mins before would be OK and have time to get programme etc before show starts?
(This is for Cyrano).

It's normally a very civilised line, but can be slow moving. I'd allow 45 rather than 30 minutes if you can, but they wouldn't start if there was still a line at the box office anyway (not if the house manager is any good, anyway). Very excited about this announcement. Was planning on going to New York to see the revival but it closed early and before I had arranged my trip away. I have to say I have been very impressed with the Southwark Playhouse over the last few years - it is really becoming a go to venue for people who live out of London. I am quite happy to travel from South Wales specifically to see productions in this venue. Bravo Southwark. Now bring on Next to Normal (fingers crossed)

Hate to mention casting as early as this... but Louise Dearman and Rachel Tucker would be a dream, their voices blend perfectly and they're so powerful. If Rachel is staying in New York for Miss Saigon then Rebecca Trehearn would be great too, but Miss Saigon isn't until 2017.

They're amazing performers, but they have matured for the part at this point. The twins are supposed to be really young, which explains why they are manhandled by so many different people. Some of their choices, the way they fall in love for the first time and the things they say are quite indicative of their age. Louise, Rachel, Kerry...all terrific performers, but it really does not make sense for them to perform these roles given that they are little divas in the making. To be honest, I even think that late 20s, which is how old Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley were when the show opened, is a bit too old for the role, but that was passible given hair, make up and the fact they performed on a Broadway stage in a proscenium setting.
They really need to be age-appropriate for this to work in Southwark. I actually think the wonderful girl who played Carrie would be wonderful in this. Or some of the girls in Bend it Like Beckham were also great and age appropriate.

Do they stay young and naive throughout the whole show? Yeah I'd say Evelyn Hoskins could be great (going by the one song I know from this) but I'd be more than happy to suspend disbelief however old the actresses are if they're giving a great performance, if there are younger actresses who could do this justice then I hope they are cast.

Though I think Skinner and Ripley, very different looking ladies, were purposely cast with slightly different looks because they really wanted to show how Daisy and Violet were quite individual in terms of their attitudes, dreams, thoughts, etc. The recent revival had a different approach and wanted to make it look more real than the sort of abstract original. Padgett and Davie did actually look virtually identical in full wigs and make up. |
