Well, dust off your best Kenneth Williams impression and prepare to "Matron!" every few moments as Fanny (rather like Cleopatra) is comin' atcha. Or at least to the Old Vic. With a touch of Alexander too. Dear Dame Penny Wilton stars. Not as Fanny though. That might be a bit much for the 'Downton' crowd. Other people are in it too. Fanny Girl

This isn’t a comedy is it? Ignorance reigns round here.

This isn’t a comedy is it? Ignorance reigns round here. Well it's Bergman innit. Not many laughs expected really. Well not intentional ones anyway.

Personally, I'd be very wary of seeing this theatre production because the film was one of my very favourites of all time, and so it would seem impossible for any other version to surpass it. There's also a much extended tv episodic version of the original, very long, cinema film.
The film is truly from the viewpoint of the children and also features an extraordinary tribute to David Bowie.

Oh Lynette, you've got to see the film, it's unmissable (except that you've obviously managed to miss it; but it's wonderful). Christmas is the best time to see it. Like HG I'm extremely wary of a stage adaptation, but we'll see.

For anyone interested and based in London, the BFI is running a Bergman season in early 2018, including 2 showings of the longer, uncut version of Fanny and Alexander: whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/ingmarbergman

As Honoured Guest says, the 1982 film is a masterpiece, at least in its full c.5-hour director's cut for TV. Timings for the Old Vic production suggest it's going to be long (1.30 and 7.00 starts), so I expect it will be modelled on the 3-hour cinema edit.
A family-run theatre is at the heart of the story, as are rich themes of role-playing and fantasy, so it's a nice idea to translate it to the stage. I'm certainly up for this now that casting has been announced, yes for Penelope Wilton but also because there's a rotating team of genuine child actors playing the title roles. I had feared they might take the easy route and cast adults as CBeebies ham-kids (they have form here in the [whisper] Spacey version of Richard III), which would have been deadly.

Its the Bergman Centenary next year, hence the interest in him.

Got stalls seats for the first Friday, sat a fair way back but at those prices I'm not going to complain too loudly (and not too far from the end of the row if I fancy doing a Parsley and disappearing into the night)

Not even really sure I want to see this but for a tenner ... plus Penelope Wilton! As long as it's not another Woyzeck, still scarred from that.

Hope it's a good one - will be a long one for sure. Still regretting not have seen the last version at Dramaten in Stockholm. That version was 3:15 and the director is usually quite good with cutting.

Okay, I have an embarrassing admission here. I did no research at all just saw the title, Penelope Wilton's name and that I could get two £10 tickets in Row P for Thursday night so bought them, thinking my husband is a history buff, he'll like something historical. Yes, I'd confused Nicholas and Alexandra the film about the Tsar of Russia with Fanny and Alexander....This may be a harder sell to him. Still....Penelope Wilton.

I've never seen the film so was intrigued by this but as the running time is currently showing as 3 hours 45, I'd have to wait for a matinee (1 pm when they start) instead of an evening performance (7 pm). 7 pm would otherwise be a brilliant evening performance time in general (see discussion on CFT thread for those who travel some distance), but not if the production doesn't end until nearly 11 pm and I wonder how many of those who have booked realise this, and how many who haven't have been deterred because they do know?

The problem is that you know the running time is way over three hours when they schedule the evening performance at 7, i see Tamburlaine at the RSC later this year is in that bracket.

Oh. No didnt know that, thanks for the heads up. Mmm not very appealing for tomorrow night, somehow had missed the obvious length implication of 7pm start.

How many intervals? Always found I can manage length better with two intervals.
