Interestingly it seemed to have mostly positive reviews during previews in Cape Town earlier this year, like this one weekendspecial.co.za/review-tiger-bay-musical/ I’m not sure what changes have been made to the show since then, if any! I know local bloggers tend to big up local productions but the response on Twitter from ‘normal’ theatregoers is very positive too |

I guess that might be true for some, and I’m sure locals like me are enjoying some of the references more than someone not familiar with Cardiff would (for example, there are a couple of scenes in an independent Cardiff department store that closed about 10 years ago) As you said earlier in the thread, it’s just a shame that a new British musical isn’t getting better reviews. It has its flaws without a doubt, but I had a great evening watching it |

The thing is with gauging responses from Twitter etc for "normal" theatre goers (whatever one is haha) is that very few people who were "meh" about something will tweet that- it's a medium of extremes so we're seeing all the "Tay amazing best ever" tweets but not the "average" theatre goer who thought it was well "average"
That's across the board not just this one.
But that said, again "local" audiences of all kinds tend to rave about something "local" so again I'm taking it with a pinch of salt- anecdotally I've heard a lot of "dull" comments that people aren't sharing on twitter etc because -and I subscribe to this way of thinking-it's considered rude to those involved.
TLDR just cos people aren't saying it on twitter doesn't mean they aren't saying it 😉

Yes, I have learned not to rely on Twitter reviews! Been suckered into booking tickets for a few plays that I hated by them.
Twitter just isn't the medium for balanced critique. It's why PR companies will set embargoes for proper reviews but allow social media 'reactions'.

How I didn't laugh I don't know. (For what it's worth there is exactly 1 book available...not a popular guy...can I interest you in a book about urchins instead sir?)

(For what it's worth there is exactly 1 book available...not a popular guy...can I interest you in a book about urchins instead sir?) John Crichton-Stuart is an interesting guy... having grown up looking at Mount Stuart over the water, and my Dad's wife is from Bute, so I've been aware of him for some time... When we visited Cardiff Castle a couple of years ago my husband asked the guide how he was perceived by the workers in Cardiff. The guide assured us that he was really well-liked because he had such care and concern for his workers. We didn't challenge the guide, but both thought "Hmm...." |
