Well I like OFAH and have never seen Paul Whitehouse live so as trepidatious as I am about this, for 11 quid and change I'm willing to take a punt!

Is that not just the theme tune to OFAH? (written by Sullivan and Chas)
Well technically the one everyone knows is the second theme, but you know what I mean.

Paul Whitehouse did a series of sketches with Harry Enfield about opera years back I seem to recall so may have a bit of musical pedigree. Chas and Dave did write a song for the Jolly Boys episode and John Sullivan had wanted them to sing the theme tune.

Preview tickets are significantly cheaper than the rest of the run, especially the Friday/Saturday. I'm too intrigued by this to miss it, think I'll book myself a cheap preview ticket and go. Surprised it's happening as quickly as it is but I'm all for it Thanks, looks like I'm going to the first preview now!

Hmm.
It's great - really great - to see someone doing a new British musical.
It's great - really great - to see producers label preview performances clearly and offer them for sale at a significant discount.
It's great - really great - to see someone do a big new musical based on unabashedly popular source material with a working-class setting...
...and for some reason these characters just don't sing for me. So much of the TV series was perfect, and so many of the original performances were irreplaceable, and I can't see what could be gained by turning it into a musical (beyond "extending the franchise"). I hope it succeeds, but I'll pass, I think - at least for now.

My concern - and what has stopped me buying a full price ticket - is that the press release mentions recreating iconic moments on stage... suggesting it might just be a rehash of the best bits from the TV show, rather than a new storyline? I can see it now, they’ll be installing a chandelier and dropping it like Phantom across the road! Also, the cast list reveals something interesting... Raquel is in it, but Uncle Albert isn’t. Raquel and Grandad never met, so it’ll be interesting to see if they do in this

I am certainly no Only Fools and Horses fan but Dianne Pilkington is involved so I will be seeing it!

Agree, I really don't see this as source for a musical but it is SO nice to see something original and British launching straight in to the West End (in the sea of the American imports) that I felt I had to get in on a reduced price preview. Will be fascinated to see what they do with it.

Chris Kiely (of Yank the musical, the fabulous, tap dancing gay journalist), has just tweeted he will be playing Mickey Pierce.

I don't know the wisdom of this (its my birthday next week and I'm going to use the 'it was a birthday present to myself' as an excuse to wheel out if it turns out to be a complete trainwreck of a production) but I've booked a front row stalls ticket for the very first night, mainly because of the presence of Paul Whitehouse and Tom Bennett in the cast (although isn't Bennett far too young to be playing Del Trotter?)

Tom Bennett in the cast (although isn't Bennett far too young to be playing Del Trotter?) How old is he? David Jason was only about 40 when 'Only Fools and Horses' started.

We also don't know when the story is set. I suspect it is going to be in the prequal/early years territory. Loved Tom Bennett in Phone Shop, incredibly funny performer.

Loved Tom Bennett in Phone Shop, incredibly funny performer. He was fabulous in the film 'Love and Friendship' too. He stole the entire thing.

Given he's writing it, composing it, staring in it, seems a bit.... ...Dennis Waterman? Write the theme toon, sing the theme toon and all that?

Since we’re in this day and age, isn’t the cast a bit...white...?

His birthdate is missing from both his IMDB and Wikipedia pages (IMDB says 'He was born in Croydon towards the end of the 20th Century' so I'm guessing he is early 30s or so?)

This could go either way. Whitehouse is an appealing choice though

Never really took to the TV show. Before my time (not in a rude way just literally) and I fear this could be tacky and dated. Hopefully i'm proven wrong!

Ah apologies I didn't realise! To be truthful, looking at the cast the only two I'm excited about is Chris and Dianne. Also, a rather small cast! 18 regular performers and 3 swings!

I am really excited for this! As a massive fan of the TV show, I hope they manage to get it to work on stage.
But I am wondering why it’s Grandad and not Uncle Albert. Even though I preferred Grandad, Albert is definitely the more iconic - AND Raquel and Cassandra didn’t appear until long after Grandad had died.
Unless there’s a surprise appearance from Uncle Albert (could Whitehouse play both - a mere guess)...just think of the ‘During the War’ eleven o’clock number they’d be missing out on.

Well, I'm a big fan of Chas Hodges and liked Only Fools and Horses on TV. Big Paul Whitehouse fan too. Denise Ranger taught me at drama school years ago, and sister CJ was in Starlight Express. All of which adds up to a winning team for me. I'll be going.
