Rhys Ifans will now be replaced by Ben Chaplin, due to 'family reasons'.

Oh, thank heavens! Not that Rhys Ifans has family reasons, I hope they are sorted as quickly and peacefully as possible and his family are all as well as can be, but I couldn't see his name in the cast list even though I was sure he had been cast, so I was just assuming I'd gone loopy.

I'm fascinated by the fact that the first production by Emma Rice's new company, "firmly based in the South West" and funded by Arts Council South West is a co-production by the Old Vic, the Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Oxford Playhouse and York Theatre Royal.

Fabulous book. I didn't think Emma Rice's adaptation of Nights At The Circus was much cop though.

These Old Vic announcements are not that exciting really, are they?

Oxford Playhouse is reportedly putting a lot into this new link up with Emma Rice. Whether Oxford audiences think it is a worthwhile investment remains to be seen. They aren't loving much at the moment.

Oh good, Oxford's reasonably convenient for me and I do seem to enjoy Rice's work more often than not.

I’ve all but given up with this place to be honest.
Very little about the programming excites me anymore, and Warchus didn’t seem to care about the Old Vic’s existing audience, and was hellbent on simply changing everything for the sake of it. Well he’s done that, and where has that left his audience?
Feeling alienated, in the case of this previous patron.

Oddly, I've found the opposite: hadn't been to the Old Vic for decades (not since Pippin, or something similar, I think) and hadn't fancied any of the recent productions when they were announced, but then found myself swayed by comments/reviews and ended up going to the last 4 (Girl From The North Country, A Christmas Carol, Fanny & Alexander & Mood Music) and really enjoying them - though sometimes being in the minority in doing so.
Now, I really don't fancy the next few, but based on recent experience, who knows?

I’ve enjoyed quite a bit there over the past couple of years: Master Builder, Caretaker, Groundhog Day... A Christmas Carol is still singing and ringing inside me. So much so that I’ve booked again for its return, taking Annas along this time to hear the music that brought joy to my ears. Girl from the North Country was a bit special, although I saw it once it’d transferred. And Emma Rice’s new offering seems quite tempting so I’ll be going along for that.
She’s a bit of a beauty, the Old Vic, I think.

Has anyone else booked for the new season today? Is it just me, or are e-tickets now the only option?

Has anyone else booked for the new season today? Is it just me, or are e-tickets now the only option? And the e-tickets now say very boldly "DO NOT PRINT. We will scan this ticket on your phone". Well, I'm sorry, but it is much faster for me to show you two or four paper tickets, fanned out so that you can check them all at the same time, rather than have me find the email, open the attachment, and scroll down so the four tickets can be zapped independently. We all know that there are people on the bus or tube who are suddenly surprised that they need a ticket or card and start fumbling in their pockets or bag holding everyone up, imagine if they only start trying to get to the relevant email when they reach the usher. E-tickets, scanned on the phone, are inefficient. Another reason for the Old Vic to go down a bit in my estimation. It also gets a bit more complex for split parties. "I'll send you the attachment, but when you arrive, use tickets 3 and 4 please". Someone is nipping out to the toilet at the interval, let me email you the attachment so you can get back in rather than have me just give you a ticket.

Has anyone else booked for the new season today? Thought about getting one of the restricted views for Wise Children but... it's such a horrible great barn of a venue so I think I'll wait for cast announcements, and if they're good try and get a PWC closer to the stage.

I'm usually on my own so I don't have that particular problem with them, but I do find it irritating that emails containing scannable tickets invariably DON'T include the title of the show or the performance date in the subject header (at least, they don't from the Old Vic or the Bridge, the two venues where I've recently bought scannable e-tickets). It would make the process significantly simpler.

Apologies for doing this, but was needing some expert opinions on Old Vic seating, as I'm looking at a Christmas Carol. After two cramped experiences in the Lillian Baylis, I have vowed to avoid sitting there again, but was wondering for anyone that has tried sitting in the restricted C18 &19 seats in the Dress, how much is the view impeded? I've checked the usual sites for advice and it doesn't appear that the pillar is in the direct eye-line of either seat. For a saving of twenty pounds I was wondering whether it was even worth the hassle or to cough up for stalls seats.
Huge thanks in advance.

I've never sat in those particular seats, but based on the photos on seatplan.com and my experience of buying restricted view seats elsewhere in the dress circle in the Old Vic, I wouldn't hesitate to book them.
(I would, though, hesitate to book some of the restricted view seats further back in the dress circle and in the stalls.)

Bear in mind that the layout for A Christmas Carol is very different to the normal Old Vic layout so views from SeatPlan won't represent what you'd see in this production - Theatremonkey has a detailed guide to the Christmas Carol layout.

I don't know if it's exactly the same but I paid £20 for C10 in the dress circle to see 'Sea Wall' and I was comfortable. There is a pillar which you are peripherally aware of, but, for me, it was fine.

Also a seating question about the non-traditional layout for Christmas Carol, would you go with Row A Seat 7 of the Dress Circle (sold as restricted because of a rail) or Row T Seat 6 of Stalls (also sold as restricted because of a slim Pilar in front)? Thanks!

Fair enough - but I sat in one of the restricted view seats in the dress circle for Sea Wall and was perfectly happy with the view, and the seat map for Christmas Carol suggests the stage platform will be in a similar position. In fact, in that configuration the views from most of the restricted view seats in the dress circle should actually be better than they would be for a show with a proscenium staging.
