I'm glad you enjoyed it, foxa, and I'm sure many others also will. I've nothing against a mainly young cast (though being that much older, I do like to have the odd character I might be better able to relate to) and some of those appearing seemed to have a large and vocal following. I don't get the fuss about George Maguire, though - to me he looked like a younger version of Russell Brand, which was a bit distracting! I'd also seen a really good play beforehand (the matinee of the touring production of The Herbal Bed), so though the two made a good contrast, the first was a hard act to follow. Its young because its about the idealism/naivety/gullibility/shallowness of youth? Its getting mixed reviews partly because it rubbishes both the far left, and right, on its travels judging from some reviews. Its message ends up somewhere else - in despairing reality. Brand would seem a suitable model for Maquires role? And he's suitably annoying. Lauren Samuels gets to sing , which is always good, and do some comedy well. Natasha Cottrell plays a familiar character well. There's some good performances from the ensemble and some funny lines too. Not sure Murdoch or Boris were ghastly enough, or could spell strategy between them, but thats in the writing. Worth a look. |

The three star reviews were about right for this show. Some good performances, particularly from Lauren Samuels, Natasha Cottrell and Maimuna Memon (George Maguire was merely okay) and a handful of standout songs, but the plot disintegrates in the second half worse than Miss Atomic Bomb and overall there's something missing - and I don't just mean anything approaching a proper set!

I was another interval-leaver - thought it was embarrassingly bad, and felt really sorry for the cast for having to come out with such clunky lyrics and dialogue, especially in a half empty theatre. Just really poor, obvious and trite.
Having said that, some people in the sparse audience were squealing with laughter, so horses for courses. Though I suspect they knew someone in the cast and were being supportive...
Nice well-priced wine though, so not a wasted evening.
