There's obviously a lot of enthusiasm here, both for the play itself and for this production and I'm tempted, so a confession and a request for advice, please: much as I usually enjoy Alan Bennett's work this play has never appealed to me so I have never seen it. I did try once (can't even recall whether in a theatre or watching a filmed version on DVD) but gave up as I couldn't get into it. So is it something which repays patience or if it doesn't grab me from the off, is this one just not for me? Thank you.

Not historically no, but the new artistic regime, and the collaboration with NT live seems to suggest a drive towards that....if it sells out Gatiss can certainly sell a play in London, so a limited run might be on the cards. Also I'm not sure what else he has on in early 2019 so I'd let bets on a strong maybe. I say this as someone also really hoping not to have to schelp up to Nottingham (don't @ me kids, I lived there for 4 years, I did my time)

Considering Adrian Scarborough rarely does the regions and Mark Gattis also, you'd think they must have a transfer in place. I can't imagine many people will be travelling to see it in Nottingham. Having said that they are NT Live-ing it around the country, which would kill off quite a few in person sales if it did come to London, so maybe the cinema broadcast is their "transfer".

I will be schlepping down to Nottingham to see it... two days after the NT Live broadcast, which was announced about twelve hours after I booked the ticket.
(I get to kill two birds with one stone, though. I have family in Nottingham.)

I'm seeing this on Saturday, and got the BEST email from the Playhouse today!
"This play contains scenes and triggers that some audience members may find distressing: Physical violence, abusive behaviour, shouting and howling. There are scenes where King George is being subjected to medical treatments used at the time. There are times when the music is loud. This production includes cigarette smoke, theatrical smoke, naked flames and strong language. "

They did an NT Live for Curious Incident, which was clearly going places, and for the Angels in America revival before it transferred to Broadway. Also for Follies - long before the second run was announced, but the second run must have been on the table as a possibility when the broadcast was being planned.
On the other hand, there's no guarantee this will transfer, even though it does look like it's been put together with a transfer in mind.

Generally solid performances - especially from Mark Gatiss and Adrian Scarborough - and the show received a half standing ovation. Unfortunately, I was in the camp of being rather underwhelmed by it.

Excellent review of this in todays edition of The Times and an even better one ( 5 stars ) in the Daily Telegraph.

does look like it's been put together with a transfer in mind. It does - though thinking about the sort of prices a stalls seat would cost, I've booked for the NT Live!

Yeah, in the case of Misty, you DEFINITELY need pre-warning that balloons are going to burst. It's not simply a minor risk in the case of that one!

Having seen this at today’s matinee. Mark Gatiss was brilliant as King George and brought a great comedic touch and a physicality to the role during his madness. He must be absolutely shattered after every show, and even more so on a double show day. This production is definitely worth the 4* reviews that it has received from the critics and would in my opinion be worth transferring to London. Even after the 25 years that this play was written, it’s themes and satire about politicians and royalty that Bennett writes about still seem relevant today.
The other cast members were for me just as good and it would be unfair to single anyone out. This was my first time at the Nottingham Playhouse, and I have to say it’s a really lovely theatre. It’s one of those theatres that wherever you sat (I was in the stalls today), I don’t think you would get a bad sightline. For £25 I certainly got great value for my ticket.
It’s definitely worth watching on NT Live on the 20th Nov if you get the chance.

Yep, I thought it was excellent. I wasn't so thrilled with the theatre tbh. We were shuffled in via a side door past a load of stacked up chairs and spare bins, and our sight lines in the far right front stalls were ok, but not ideal. And the staff were clueless about where to stamp out parking discount ticket. It wasn't a patch on the lovely Derby theatre I also visited for the first time a few weeks ago.
Anyway, that aside, production was excellent, and I really liked the set. I particularly liked the Queen, I thought she was really good. At the end of act 1, when the light shone down on poor George and the music really kicked in, I got the shivers, for one of the very few times in the theatre this year.
I want to go and listen to Handel now.

Will the NT live have an encore showing? Picturehouse has encores on December 4th, but during the day. Haven't seen any listed at Vue, not sure about other chains.

This production had already sold reasonably well, but tickets have been flying out of the Box Office since the reviews came out. Whether that makes a West End transfer likely is another matter all together.
