Inheard in December that it was planning a transfer to the Marble Arch Theatre following Five Guys Named Moe, so if that is true, or plans have changed, we will have to wait and see. |

My friend from choir saw this over the weekend and was disappointed not to be chosen for the audience participation involving {Spoiler - click to view}
Kazoos, because we in choir have weirdly incorporated Kazoo playing into our repertoire and she could have rocked it. Not that we're attention seeking types or anything. |

Thought Brigstock was adequate vocally - just adequate - but he won me over by the end. He fell off once, clowned about it, then did it in one. Enjoyed the production a lot overall, great ensemble. Will blog more later in the week. He didn't fall off this afternoon but hid voice is woefully inadequate with no personality. The first time I haven't been touched by 'The Colors of My Life'. A great ensemble though, very hard-working. |

Does the venue have adavanced in person booking? I found on the website about the box office is open a couole hours before the show but nothing to say if I can book or not.

Yes you can book in person at the box office before the show. Probably better a couple of hours before as it gets busy nearer to show time with people collecting tickets. |

My review of this:
Set in the round, this tale of the circus’s greatest showman boasts a memorable score by Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart.
The Menier has turned the bar area into a museum of curiosities ‘on loan from the estate of PT Barnum’, into which ringmaster Dominic Owen kickstarts the show by looking for Tom Thumb – in the auditorium itself there are coloured lightbulbs, posters and a circus ring with a tiny stool and piano.
The original productions of Barnum, starring Michael Crawford and Jim Dale, are renowned for their comic timing, showmanship and stunts. This production is high energy but falls a bit flat in its leading performance; Marcus Brigstocke interacts well with the audience in the second half, but his voice is weak and he looks more like a fish out of water than the centre of attention. If Barnum doesn’t steal the show (although he did make it across the tightrope in one go), then there’s something not quite right.
As the ladies in his life, Laura Pitt-Pulford makes a steely yet touching Chairy, while Celinde Schoenmaker hits the high notes as the Swedish nightingale Jenny Lind.
In the ensemble, Owen catches the eye throughout with tumbles and liveliness, Preston and Kelsey Jamieson do lifts and fire work, and the company perform a range of routines from a brass band and tap dancing, to aerial hoops and basic magic tricks (some of which involve the audience at the start).
Recommended even with the central miscasting, director Gordon Greenberg uses the space well and Harry Francis dances with aplomb as Tom Thumb. There’s even a tiny toy train to represent travel and a range of model buildings hoisted on hooks to show location, and ‘a real live elephant’. It’s all rather charming and displays quite an amount of what Barnum describes as ‘humbug’.

I saw this on Saturday evening with an enormous amount of trepidation. It was my first experience of Barnum, so had nothing else to go by except the comments I’ve read so far. The company (as others have said) are exceptionally talented and dedicated. I couldn’t take my eyes off them - which was of detriment to Marcus unfortunately when he was on stage. To simply echo the thoughts expressed here previously, his charisma uniqueness nerve and talent is seriously lacking. He does not command the show at all. He fell off the roof three time’s before needing a hand to hold as he finally made it across.
I still really enjoyed the show, it is a great representation of how integral a supporting cast is.

Gordon Greenberg has managed to direct something that is even more boring than his Guys and Dolls
MB was beyond terrible but so is the musical. Barnum is a sh!t musical
I feel for the rest of the cast.
One of the worst evenings in the theatre. I found myself longing for a fire alarm to go off ...

I didn't hate it. I love the score, I love what they've done with the space and I loved the ensemble. It's a lot of fun!

I'm booked to see this in a couple of weeks but I have no idea how I'm going to manage to take Marcus Brigstocke seriously after seeing him prancing around in lederhosen at the Improvathon this evening!

Saw this again this week after seeing it in the previews. Many many times better.
Most of the fumbling and mistakes were gone, Marcus's singing and presence much more there, Laura Pitt Pullford kept her accent going and either the music was much more balanced or I had a better seat.
Marcus got two steps onto the tightrope and fell off. Made a long joke about it. But second attempt, he made it all the way after nearly losing his balance two thirds of the way across.
I had a front row restricted view seat. Massive wide pillar to the right, which blocked off most of that side, including the start of the tightrope. Small slim pillar to the left, which was a distraction. But overall, a good seat for the price, particularly as most have distractions. And, you're mostly kept hidden from the audience interaction.
The interval jokes ended up with one girl near me getting a trouser leg covered with ice cream from her seat neighbour (they weren't together), so perhaps a segment to calm down a bit. But otherwise very good and much more watchable now than early in the run.
