Reading this thread whilst actually on a cruise is a lot of fun. Also the standard of shows on this one is really high. If not blatant rip offs of other shows e.g. Last night was called 'Steel City' which is just the full monty with some questionable Sheffield accents.

This is quite a big thing on Broadway, where loads of big Broadway stars perform on cruise ships, usually at the request of Seth Rudetsky! Quite an impressive line up so I presume it's either going to be a quality thing and/or the pay is very good (as it most certainly is for performing on ships!). Interesting to see whether the idea takes of, but it does seem like it's for the more well-off...

I've done a few cruises and the evening entertainment is usually the best bit, at least on newer vessels. I mean, if you go on a "normal" holiday on dry land, you'll end up either in some pub/bar/entertainment venue in the evening too or (if you're like me) in bed early. So it's quite nice to have the theatre basically next door after dinner and afterwards it's not far to your bed. I've seen rip-offs of Mamma mia, Rock of Ages, We Will Rock You and a bunch of others (if you can call jukebox musicals rip offs to begin with), plus some really good singers and acrobats.
The "cooped-up" thing is not really a problem, since you're in port (almost) every day, so you're off the boat and away from the other passengers for many hours every day.
This said, my last cruise experience was so terrible that I've gone off cruises for good, with or without musical performers in shorts. I rather take my time to explore ONE destination for some days and get the sense that I really got to know the place. I also don't want to contribute to the problem some popular destinations like Venice or Barcelona experience with cruise tourists in particular that swamp the streets in their droves, clog up everything but spend very little money.
As for the class thing: Honestly, if I had the money for the "better" areas of a big cruise ship, I'd rather spend it on a smaller (thus more expensive) cruise ship. We did fork out an extortionate sum for a once-in-a-lifetime cruise to paradise some years ago and the small ship, the atmosphere and the passengers were on a whole other level. Though that might also have had to do with the fact that it was an American ship with mostly American passengers. Otherwise I've been on ships with mainly German passengers and they're every bit as horrible as you imagine. Want to see German tourists at their finest? Watch people scoot up the sun deck of a ship at the crack of dawn to distribute their towels over all the sunloungers they can get their mitts on. And queue in front of the restaurants 20 minutes before they even open, so they can hog the best tables for the rest of the evening. And send one person to block the entire front row of the theatre an hour before the show while the rest stuffs their faces at the restaurant.

I'm in for this! Bad buffet behaviour? It's a tad annoying but there are about a dozen eating places so I rarely go to buffets on cruises. Being cooped up with loads of people? It rarely feels like that. I've been on one of the hewwwj ships and was dreading sharing it with 5900'odd others - I don't know where they all were, I got the same sunbed by the same quiet pool every day and rarely queued for anything. I understand people's trepidation, but after 30'odd cruises I'm hooked and this would be fantastic. Yes, it's the North Sea in October but I've rarely felt any movement on all my cruises.
I befriended Ramin many years ago when he started out on cruises - where he met his lovely wife. People scoff, but until it's experienced it's hard to describe how fantastic cruising holidays are.
BUT! It isn't for everybody, I do understand that, however ALL my friends do it now and they all turned their noses up at it before they gave it a go. I think we'll need to act fast to get the cheaper cabins at £609 - some are quite expensive.

......nope....still no. I'll admit to thinking about it for a few seconds when I saw that post, but even with BB on board I'm still land lubbering. In all seriousness, cruise ships are where many of the performers newly out of performers' colleges learn their craft and it is a fantastic way for them to do so, whilst seeing a bit of the world (or oil rigs) or whatever. I know several people who have done this and they have all loved it. |
