Louise is fab but all wrong for this. She's a belter, and I can't see her do a period piece at all. Plus, she's yet to prove that she's a subtle performer. She's only done big mega-musical types, or shows were she belts (brilliantly). But I think she needs to prove herself first with more serious work before she can tackle something like this. Yeah thats very true. Especially as her main roles have been things like Guys & Dolls, Evita and Wicked, which don't really go for subtle well. However, as said by someone else, she really brought it out of the bag with Side Show. I personally would rsther see her do Finding Neverland because the moment I heard it, I knew she had to be the one to play that role, but eventually she could do this too given more role diversity. Louise is just, she can do it all!

I saw Elaine Paige and thought she was really hammy acting wise - she sang the score magnificently and it sounded so different in her voice. We sent my parents a few weeks before as an anniversary present and they got Claire Moore and loved her. It felt like a very glitzy occasion in the Palladium and it seemed to catch the excitement of the Rodgers and Hammerstein shows when they were new in Drury Lane or the Palace.

I cannot tell you how happy this makes me. Big scale production. Palladium. KELLI O'HARA. Can't bloody wait. What a year next year is shaping up to be for musicals.

Oh sh*t! With Kelli, I'm so there!
Mever had any desire to see the show, but with her at the helm, I can't miss it!

This triggers memories of 1982 when I was one of the Royal Ballet dancers in Northampton Amateur Operatic Society's production. *shudder*
We were told to colour our skin using a solution of potassium permanganate - to make us look more "authentic". Only it didn't work on my skin - so I had to have full body make-up every night. Not the sort of thing a shy 12 year old wants to happen.

But wasn't the general consenus with that Tony win that it was more a "if we don't give it to her now, when will we ever?!" kinda thing, with Kristin really being the more deserving for On the Twentieth Century, who won every award going for that performance bar the Drama League award which you can only win once anyway? I mean, having seen bootlegs of both, Kristin would of had my vote personally, because her and Andy Karl were the whole ahow, where as the entire cast and production of King and I were equally good.

Great and welcome news.
Does this mean the Palladium won't be doing a pantomime next year then?

Apparently panto was a 3 year contract, so assuming that's true, The King & I will probably be a limited run, unless they've made a settlement with Qdos to take the panto elsewhere/not do it.

I assume they'll be using a set similar to the US tour as the Broadway production was designed for the Beaumount in mind.
Off-topic but I wonder if My Fair Lady, should it be a hit on Broadway will end in London? I assume they would have Cameron Mackintosh involved since he has the West End stage rights.

In BRITAIN, shouldn't we really have an Anna who can do an English accent without sounding like she's trying really, really hard to do an English accent?

I thought it was a 3 year contract, but then again it would be ludicrous to put The King and I in for a limited run. impressive glut of musicals been announced, think it has been 4/5 in as many weeks, also ENO and Regent's Park hasn't announced. Bat Out of Hell is coming back and is expected to be the Dominion. Also Dear Evan Hansen, Waitress and Come From Away are expected to transfer and Groundhog Day is also expected to come back.

its a limited 14 or 15 week run according to the article. It will then go on an international tour. This makes sense as i cant see this filling the palladium long term.

I will probably be sent to hell for this but I have never heard of her and had to Google the name, and I thought I knew a bit about musical theatre. Now the Palladium is a monster to fill so doesn't it need a name that joe public knows to sell it? Once the King and I fans and O'Hara fans have been how do you keep the place filled every night? I just think that you need a name that the general public would know to fill the place. Anyway, I'll get my coat!!!!

Once all the wendies have seen it/been seen seeing it and the coach trips have been I wouldn’t have thought it had much of a life. If Elaine Paige couldn’t keep it going at what was pretty much her financially successful peak, some Broadway no-mark doesn’t stand a chance. 😂

This is very exciting! It would be great if I could see this and Company in one trip to London, but I don't think it will run into September.

I agree, Audra couldn't fill an average size theatre in the Summer and she is more acclaimed and well known than Kelli!

Oh lovely. Hopefully Kelli will have perfected her Elaine Paige impression even more by then.
I'm more excited by Ken Watanabe coming over actually. That moment in 'Shall We Dance' when he says "come" in his low sexy phone voice made my nethers all-a-tremble.

You can absolutely keep all your modern day sexy musicals, there is NOTHING more erotic in musical theatre than Shall We Dance.

Unless you're a Broadway addict specifically, why would one?!? Has she been in anything in the West End?!

And she doesn't really do TV and Film either other than her Oscar worthy cameo in Sex and the City 2 😅

Has she been in anything in the West End?! No I don't believe she has. She's very much a Broadway actress, very well respected though. She's had six Tony nominations, winning once (for The King & I): The Light In The Piazza The Pajama Game South Pacific Nice Work If You Can Get It The Bridges of Madison County The King & I I don't think they'll be necessarily selling the show at the Palladium on her name alone though.
