Which musical did you fall for instantly, on the very first viewing without any pre-conceptions?

Brilliant question. Not sure. I pretty much know if I like something and if I don't I don't tend to give it a second chance. Will have a think if there are any shows which I have grown to like.

Just to clarify, are we saying shows we have seen with no prior knowledge AT ALL to score, plot or anything like that? I feel it makes it a lot more interesting like that.  |

Oh gosh, oki I am going with shows that I had never heard the score or known the plot before going in, because that makes it a lot more interesting for me personally. You'll notice some of my favourites aren't on here, because I knew a lot about them prior. And some other new shows are missing, but I only want to include my absolute favourites. So my Top 10 (in order of seeing them!), I think, is:

This is something that happens almost all the time with me. I feel like i always come out thinking "i don't know what to think, hmmm" and then end up appreciating it far more over the coming days and weeks. I just think i'm a bit slow, don't worry.

1. Groundhog Day. Instantly fell in love.
2. 13 (Jason Robert Brown). Never seen it but this is the first musical that popped in my head when thinking about 'growers'. Wasn't into it on my first listen but love it now. Actually, when I first listened, I tweeted about it to my rather modest amount of followers saying something along the lines of 'considering it's a JRB, I thought I'd enjoy 13 a lot more'. Didn't tag Jason or anyone or anything to do with any production of the show. I now know that Mr Robert Brown likes to search twitter for anything that might be to do with him, including popular abbreviations of his name (JRB), and so the morning after that tweet, I found I had received a tweet from Jason Robert Brown himself saying simply: "listen better".

Groundhog Day is the most reccent instant love. I instantly loved The Last 5 Years but haven't loved anything else of JRBs instantly...clearly I need to 'listen better' too haha
Le Mis for me took YEARS to grow on me. Also Rent I didn't instantly love, I liked the music, and saw it once before something hit me and it was like 'Bang'.

City of Angles - loved it straight away
Stephen Ward - once I appreciated the history a bit more, I enjoyed listening to the lyrics more and more on the cast recording, even if I only saw it once

1. Book of Mormon. I saw it the week it opened in NYC and it was a complete breath of fresh air.
2. Maybe Billy Elliot. Didn't LOVE it the first time but it became one of my faves.

Instantly: Memphis (went in knowing two songs - Memphis Lives in Me and Steal Your Rock 'n' Roll - and nothing else, absolutely loved it and am still gutted there's been no news on the tour)
Grower: Rock of Ages (went in with no idea what to expect, enjoyed it well enough the first time but wasn't particularly fussed, then saw it again on tour and fell in love)

1. Instant: I was surprised how much I enjoyed Half a Sixpence last year, knowing neither plot nor music before going in. Some other instant loves were Rent, American Idiot and Book of Mormon, which always felt like a breath of fresh air at their time of opening.
2. Took Long: Most Sondheim. I think I was simply too young/too immature and/or my English was too bad at the time when I first explored musical theatre to appreciate him. I only revisited "Sunday in the Park with George" now because I quite fancy Jake Gyllenhaal. I remembered being bored stiff by the CD when I first listened to the OBC in the early 90s and was stunned now how wonderful the whole thing is, music, lyrics and story.

1. Lots fall in to this category. The Hunting of the Snark will always be my first love ;-). Aida. Wicked. La Cava. Many more!
2. Urinetown (I didn't know what to think of this after seeing it in London. I found it too gratuitously violent. I saw it again as a Fringe production and I liked the direction of that better. Subtler.

1 Hairspray, it was love from the minute Tracey showed up in that bed.
2 Rock of ages, I only returned as so many covers were on the first time and it grew into an addiction.

Most musicals I see, I either like straight away or not at all. A definite exception was Miss Saigon - thought it was okay the first time I saw it, loved it the second time.
Groundhog Day, I came away from the performance loving it, but if you'd asked me halfway through the first half I'd have said I hated it.
