The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom which debuted in Australia two years ago is coming to the West Yorkshire Playhouse but directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie who choreographed In The Heights and also has Jekyll and Hyde coming up at the Old Vic. It'll be interesting if he'll be allowed to make changes as the Australian production wasn't well received.

That sounds enticing! Strictly Ballroom's one of my favourite films and Drew McOnie has proven a choreography genius. Hopefully he'll get full carte blanche here indeed.

I was only saying to someone a few days ago that I love Baz Luhrmann and I wish there was a stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge. This will do nicely for now!

What a bizarre venue for it. I would've thought it was suited more to the Curve for an out-of-town tryout. But exciting news for McOnie!

I was only saying to someone a few days ago that I love Baz Luhrmann and I wish there was a stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge. This will do nicely for now! I suspect the Luhrmann production of La Boheme is the closest that we will get to that. They certainly inhabit the same world and the aesthetics are very similar - even if the music isn't. |

I don't know if I am keen on this as a musical or not - problem when it'a a favourite film is that the stage version could be a big disappointment. I will wait with interest for reports.

I must say, the WYP seem to be doing alright lately at co-producing musicals, i.e. Sweeney Todd with WNO, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with Music & Lyrics, I'm sure Into The Woods will do great in other Opera North venues as well (just surprised that the Annie UK tour turned out to be a totally different version given it had the same creative team!).

Booked to see this Dec 10. Can't wait. I do love that theatre outside London is very affordable. I see amazing shows in the Stalls at the Royal Court in Liverpool. 13 pounds!

I am really excited about this. Looks like Drew McOnie has assembled a wonderful cast. I see that this production is playing in Toronto from April until July next Summer at the Princess of Wales Theatre so I guess that means it won't be arriving in the West End until after that.

OMG where does one begin? Just breathtakingly brilliant! The casting is superb. Sam Lips as Scott is a triple threat and devastatingly handsome. Gemma Sutton shows what a fine actress she is as Fran. Tamsin Carroll is perfection as Shirley. Stephen Matthews breaks your heart as Doug. Julius D'Silva is a comic genius as Barry Fifye and there are wonderful cameos from Richard Grieve as Les,Eve Polcarpou as Abuela, Charlotte Gooch as Tina Sparkle, Richard Dempsey as JJ, Gary Watson as Ken and Lauren Stroud as Liz.
The set is beautiful with many Luhrmann-sequel references and Catherine Martin's costumes are glorious. Drew McOnie is a genius....the production has all the camp that you would expect but it has a heart (supplied by Scott's parents)
The audience reaction was phenomenal and I can't wait to see it again. I'm sure the reviews will be terrific and can't see why it won't transfer into the West End. It's brilliant...if you are near Leeds this Christmas go...you won't be disappointed. "I've got my Happy Face on today!"

Strictly ballroom the film is a camp, fun OTT joy of a film which means any theatrical version needs to be really good to justifiy its exsistence. They have taken all the good components of the film, put it a pot, gave it a stir and have come out with pure theatrical gold. Not sure what they have changed since the mixed reviews it received at its premier in Australia, but I just loved this. Most fun I have had at the theatre for many a year!

I am in Leeds next Monday and was hoping to see this. I was planning to see Kerry Ellis but she's cancelled and can't get refund on transport and hotel so we are going anyway. Sadly the show doesn't seem to do Mondays. Ahhh. Oh well, t'pub it is then...
