Worth mentioning that performances are often given with English surtitles. If you fancy a day or two on the continent, 12th April, 10th and 17th May 2018 so far scheduled for surtitled performances.

Sounds great! I'd be amazed if this doesn't come to London

I think they do every Thursday performance of their productions with English surtitles, and, I believe, all August performances.

Thanks, Baemax. I saw it on Thursday and it's one of the best theatre productions I have ever seen.

This is on at the ITA online on Sunday 21st March. I had a slight pang when looking for this thread and saw that in late 2019 we were getting exciting about a West End version also directed by Icke with Helen Mirren and Mark Strong.... Anyway, looking on the bright side, things may start getting going in three or four months...
On 7th March they are showing something called La Reprise which Billington gave four stars to at Edinburgh. Directed by Milo Rau, about the murder of a gay man.

I saw an interview recently with Helen Mirren which indicated she was still planning to do this but of course it was uncertain when.

I saw A Little Life (ITA) and was excellent, subtitles didn't distract from the acting at all.

I caught this in Edinburgh and thought it was well written and acted. The only problem was the odd choice to situate most of the action at a table that was so far stage left that it could barely be seen by a lot of the audience, but that wouldn't be a problem in a filmed version for online.

Sonia Friedman mentioned in her interview with Baz that Oedipus is still happening but without Helen Mirren as she has a scheduling conflict which I assume is 1932, the Yellowstone prequel. Role is being recast but Mark Strong is still attached.

Shame Mirren is no longer attached but wonder who may replace her. Charlotte Rampling would be my pick.

Disappoint but not surprised to hear Mirren is no long attached. I doesn't seem like she ever has a day off. She's always booked and busy. I wonder if they're going to try and get a name that's on par with Mirren's.
I like the Rampling suggestion. I would love someone like Fiona Shaw. Scott Thomas would be good too.

Fiona Shaw is 63. Scott Thomas is 61. So not in contention really. Can't imagine Rampling doing it, I've seen her on stage but not often. Helen Mirren is 76. Frances de la Tour is 77. That's the sort of age. Penelope Wilton 75. Janet Suzman 83. Or if they have a Broadway transfer in mind there are more options like Glenn Close (75).

The last version I saw had Ralph Fiennes and Claire Higgins. She's only about 6 years older than him.
I'd enjoy Sinead Cusack, Harriet Walter or Jessica Lange doing this

In theory their real-world ages don't matter; what matters is the age they can act. How old are the characters supposed to be? Oedipus about 40, Jocasta about 60?

In practice I'm not sure telling Kristin Scott Thomas they want her to play Mark Strong's mother would meet with much success. I saw the Fiennes version. I also saw the Peter Hall NT version before that with Alan Howard - Jocasta seems to have been played by Suzanne Bertish who was 14 years younger than Howard at the time - is that right ?

He looks good for his age. They may be able to get away with it but maybe it would be pushing it. May I ask, what did you see Rampling in and was she any good onstage?

She was in "The False Servant" by Marivaux at NT in 2004 with Nancy Carroll and Adrian Scarborough, directed by Jonathan Kent. She was fine but (unusually) the direction by Jonathan Kent was a real mess and it was quite a tedious evening. I'm hoping the forthcoming Orange Tree version is better.

You're being too literal. Of the pair who played it in Amsterdam (and Edinburgh), Hans Kesting, who has a similar energy to Mark Strong's, is a couple of years older than Marieke Heebink. It worked beautifully.

It worked beautifully. OK. Let me try this: there are so few major parts available for actresses over 70 that only actresses over 70 should play them. Any good ?
