i know this was revived at the Old Vic, must be 6-7 years ago, however good plays have a habit of been done often. I understand this is a great play, however I have never seen it.
So why am I a thread starter? Because there was a excellent production done by the Galway, Ireland - Druid Theatre Company who are the "finest theatre production company in Ireland", I only assume equivalent to English Touring Theatre or Kneehigh. I just missed their production in Dublin, which returned from St Anne's Warehouse, New York. So would love to see this come over to London, do Druid bring shows over? What kind of theatre would be perfect for this?
However when I was in Dublin I saw Druid's production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot, which was marvellous.

The original production was co-produced by Druid and the Royal Court. At that time, many Druid productions played in London, as did many other Irish productions from the Abbey, the Gate, Field Day and more. More recently, Druid toured several productions throughout the UK. The Tricycle has hosted many Irish productions from smaller companies. But in the last five years or so, this all seems to have dried up in London.

More recently, Druid toured several productions throughout the UK. The Tricycle has hosted many Irish productions from smaller companies. But in the last five years or so, this all seems to have dried up in London. Thanks for that, was unaware of that. Tricycle would have been a great venue, as Kilburn/Cricklewood has/had a massive Irish enclave. Hopefully they will re-introduce bringing shows over and touring. i think it was the Young vic when i saw this, but it was great and i would love for it to return Did I get the wrong Vic or did both do them? |

You might have confused it with The Playboy of the Western World, an earlier classic Irish comedy, which was revived in a new production at the Old Vic a few years ago. Funnily enough, Druid toured their production of this play (Playboy) in the UK about five years ago. It was a striking production but unfortunately the accents were authentic, with softened and mutated consonants, and it was absolutely impossible to understand anything that the main actor said. So the production fell flat as a pancake in Cardiff, where I saw it, and it determined me never again to attend a Druid production. It was infuriating and a disappointing waste of time to see it, and especially frustrating as it was clearly a very good production. It would have benefited from surtitles. In fact, they were necessary. |

Doubt this will come to England. Druid dont tour here anymore. They did an interesting sounding Henriad recently that toured Ireland then went to New York but never had a sniff of coming here.

DruidMurphy (a trilogy style season of Tom Murphy plays) played Hampstead a few years ago. I think they played Salford and Oxford as well. I think DruidShakespeare (The Henriad) didn't go to Britain as it may have been considered it a case of coals to Newcastle to bring Shakespeare over. Their Waiting for Godot is a huge hit in Ireland at the moment - I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a London season somewhere.

The Tricycle is due to reopen next year, so hopefully they will be able to play there!

I don't think there really is a shortage of venues for them in London - they've played the Donmar, the National, Hampstead and The Royal Court. I think they are more focussed on American touring as they have alliances with Lincoln Center, St. Ann's Warehouse, BAM and Spoleto. What sometimes happens too is a Druid production opens in Ireland with a stellar cast like The Playboy of The Western World with Cillian Murphy and Anne Marie Duff or Long Days Journey into Night with Marie Mullen, James Cromwell and Michael Esper but the stars aren't available for transfers or long tours.
