The reviews are out and it’s mixed positive, the Variety review has a massive spoiler so I’d avoid reading it.
It seems Ol Parker was a good replacement for Phyllida Lloyd and Catherine Johnson as his direction and script was praised in some of the reviews,

I wasnt a huge fan of the first film (or the stage version) because it was just too cheesy. But this film is much better in my opinion, it has slightly more depth and feeling behind it. Lily James is the star here. She looks gorgeous, sings well and has great energy as young Donna and carries the film. Anthny has covered most of it, but i must mention jessica Keenan Wynn as young Tanya. She has clearly done her homework and has Christine Baranski's voice down perfectly. Apart from 1 or 2, the songs arent just shehorned in and bring some emotion to it. Cher is.... Cher and is not in it for long at all. Despite the weeks it took her to film it  |

Odd that the American critics seem to be most dismissive of the songs that weren't hit singles being used in the movie, one even calling them "crap". Abba had relatively few US hits compared to most other countries, even some big songs failed to chart there. Very much a case of " this is unfamiliar so I won't even bother to listen properly", which is pretty shoddy work for someone making a living criticizing other peoples' art.

What’s the betting we’ll get Mamma Mia! How Can I Resist You! in 2028? My God, I can't wait! Actually, here's an idea for a jukebox musical - Abba songs not included in MM1 or MM2 and a completely new story that has no connection to Mamma Mia. Their back catalogue is huge and so many of the sings are inherently musical. Frankly I think a gay love story would be nice, set in Stockholm, against a Melodifestivalen back drop perhaps. Lovely. |

Judy Craymer mentioned in the press conference that it was Richard Curtis who suggested the idea of doing 'a Godfather part II' approach and also that neither Catherine Johnson or Phyllida Lloyd were interested in doing the sequel but gave Judy the blessing to develop it. Catherine Johnson does have story credit so I wonder what her involvement was. Also read that Tom Hanks auditioned for a role but was unsuccessful because his singing wasn't great, I'm guessing it was the role of Fernando. You do have to wonder then if that's the case what the casting team's idea of 'great' singing was being that they cast Pierce Brosnan. |

I rewatched the movie the other day and I don't really know what people have against Pierces singing, sure it's gruff and gravely but it works for the songs and the role in an Irish pub singer meets rex Harrison way. The Sams on stage are often not the best singers anyway. I find Colin Firth a lot worse tbh.

I can't watch the first film without thinking of this spoof French and Saunders did for Comic Relief: Yes I rewatched the first film the other day and this spoof immediately after. Nothing against the first film, I enjoy it a lot but I thought the spoof was better! Jennifer Saunders plays Meryl to perfection in that spoof but I think my favourite bits were Matt Lucas playing Anthony Van Laast and doing the choreography and also Joanna Lumley playing Pats..er.. Tanya! Don't think anyone in the film cast or creative went unscathed! |

Jennifer as Cher, Beattie Edmondson as Young Donna/Lily James, Josh Widdicombe or a smaller swede as Young Bill/Josh Dylan, Jack Whitehall as Young Harry/Hugh Skinner, Colin Morgan as Young Sam/Jeremy Irvine. No idea on Young Tanya or Young Rosie. |

Some comments from Bjorn about the film and new music. Dare we dream of a new Abba Album?
ABBA recently delighted fans when they revealed they have recorded new music – their first in 35 years.
And now Björn Ulvaeus has given more of an insight about what the pair of tracks sound like.
Speaking on the red carpet at the premier for Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again, the musician said: "One of them is a pop tune, very danceable. The other is more timeless, more reflective, that is all I will say. It is Nordic sad, but happy at the same time."
He added: "I think that exuberant quality of the two ladies [Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad] together singing, that makes the saddest song a bit uplifting. I think that is what happens and that [it] is very organic: [it] isn't calculated, [it] just happened that way."
Björn, 73, also spoke about the possibility of releasing another album with the band.
"Doing another album is like doing Mamma Mia 3: what is the point unless there is a good reason, good script, good environment?" he said. "It is such a joyful experience, so that is a reason to do it."
The Mamma Mia sequel is set to be released in cinemas on July 20.
Reviews have already poured in, praising the movie as being camp, silly and joyful.
Original star Julie Walters, who resumes her role as Rosie in the follow-up, recently admitted she didn't think an ABBA-tastic sequel would be any good – until she saw the script.
"I couldn't see how it could work and what they could do with us," she said. "So, my first reaction when my agent told me they were making Mamma Mia 2 was 'Oh God no, it is going to be awful'.
"But the script was so good. I think it is fantastic. I think it is better [than the first one]."
