I think this movie is being overhyped in fairness. I think the first one is just the perfect jukebox music in that the songs compliment the story, whereas this one... anything goes.
It bugs me that they basically released every Cher scene before the movie was even released, and that Andy Garcia and Cher had very little screen time - I half expected it be announced Fernando was Sophie’s grandad!
What’s up with the dates too? It’s set in 1979, with Mamma Mia being set 20 years later (where Sophie is 20) and then the sequel set 5 years later - so Donna is only 44ish when she died? I bet it was that bloody goat.
I know it’s not supposed to be a serious movie, but you know... these things I notice lol.
Lily James carries the movie but I thought her too polished and well spoken to play Donna. But she’s definitely one to watch.
Anyway... I sort of feel like it’s the middle act in some bigger story and that we need a final 3rd act to bring everything full circle. Give it another 10 years then make Sophie a grandmother I say.

My friend summed it up perfectly though... Mamma Mia is the Saturday night pizza and vodka movie, whereas Mamma Mia 2 is your Sunday afternoon hungover-on-sofa sort of film.

I saw it today and really enjoyed it, the plot makes no sense and neither does the timeline but you don’t watch Mamma Mia! for a decent plot.
It’s more sombre than the first film but I think that works in its favour and the flashbacks are very well done. Lily James is just wonderful as Young Donna and captures the character so well, Christine Baranski and Julie Walters are excellent as always but Jessica Keenan Wynn and Alexa Davies do a good job as their younger counterparts, I liked Hugh Skinner and Josh Dylan as Young Harry and Bill but Jeremy Irvine didn’t quite work for me, his accent was all over the place. Cher was fantastic but she’s only in it for a brief period
It’s a credit to Ol Parker that the sequel works as a film but I cannot see it being adapted as a stage sequel because it’s a lot more cinematic compared to the first film and you’d have to change a lot plot wise and song wise for it to work

Yeah I agree that it'd be nigh-on impossible to put this on stage. Switching scenes so often for one, but because they used songs in this film that they didn't use in the first film but *are* in the original stage production, about half the songs would be repeated if they turned the sequel into a stage musical!

I was very impressed with Jeremy Irvine's accent. Taken as itself, it was VERY strange, but taken as a Pierce Brosnan accent, I thought it an impressive match.

I loved this film SO much!!
It made me laugh and cry. I never cry at films usually (I’m quite cold hearted in that respect) but the last 5 minutes had me in tears!
Cher was fantastic.
Lily James was brilliant - loved all young Donna’s clothes!
Young Bill was definitely ‘a bit of all right!’
I agree that the character of Sophie seemed stressed for a lot of the film - she had a lot going on!
It’s definatrly not as fluffy and more emotional than the first film.
Beautiful scenery - I might add Croatia to the travel list!
Young Rosie and Tanya were spot on! And Christine Baranski and Julie Walters were as brilliant as ever! ‘I think my soulmate may be carbs. Mines wine.’ I feel you ladies!!
10/10. Going again next week.

Saw it again last night and loved it just as much, as well as noticing little details I hadn't picked up on before, like the boat the girls dance on during When I Kissed the Teacher being called Chiquitita!
It just puts me in such a good mood, and I still have Abba songs in my head, including ones I wasn't familiar with before the movie, which is possibly the nicest thing about it all.
I've also been watching a lot of the promotional work the cast did for the movie and have discovered that Lily James and Amanda Seyfried are hilarious in interviews together. Such a shame that they couldn't share any scenes in the movie, for obvious reasons!

Went to see this tonight based on the positive comments on here. This was the worst thing I've EVER sat through at the cinema. I didn't enjoy the first Mamma Mia movie very much either but this was definitely worse.

Loved the first one, this one is a whole load of "meh".
It's basically the same storyline? We see Donna's relationships in flashback, there is a crisis regarding the hotel, Donna's friends get wobbly-kneed at the sight of fit blokes. It even starts and ends the same - Amanda Seyfried posting a letter to her dads, and at the church at the top of the mountain.
Also they had to reuse the best Abba songs because the canon is not big enough to sustain another film...
And seeing as the best thing by FAR about the first one was Meryl Streep's performance, it made zero sense to form a storyline that doesn't involve her.

Okay, PSA: if you didn't like the original Mamma Mia!, then nothing in this one is going to change your mind. It's all plot-light, beautiful-scenery-heavy, and a lot of Abba songs being sung by people with varying degrees of skill. Some of the cast is new, some of the cast is returning, it's tonally quite different in parts, but honestly, if you're thinking "well I hated the first one but these people say the second one is good", then maybe consider that the people who enjoyed the second one also enjoyed the first one, and if you didn't enjoy the first one then there's not a lot more to get out of the second one.
It's just becoming a recurring thing now, not only on this board but in other corners of the internet and even real life.
"Oh, you saw the new Mamma Mia film, Baemax? Did you enjoy it?"
"Oh yes I did, very much!"
"I'm thinking about going to see it, would you recommend it?"
"Definitely, if you liked the first one, you'll love this!"
"Oh, well I hated the first one."
I WISH I'd had this conversation only once or not at all, but it weirdly keeps happening, so let's just put it out there once and for all: yes, some of us absolutely adore this film, but if it doesn't sound like your jam at all, then no one will think less of you for putting your hard-earned cash towards literally anything else. I guess if you want to complain about it, then maybe you should go and see it so at least your complaints can be informed ones, but honestly it's okay to just let this one go slipping through your fingers.

I saw this yesterday, and okay while it is plot light. I took a huge theme of motherhood from it. Sophie making her mother proud, Donna's mother returning, Donna becoming a mother in the flashbacks and other things you'll know if you've seen the film. Yes it starts and ends in the same way as the first one but that's intentional. Standout performance for me was Jessica Keenan Wynn, she just was Christine Baranski, however many years ago this was supposed to be.
Lily James reminded more of Sophie than Donna. I suppose thats good casting though, because Donna in the flashbacks is supposed to be around the same age. Despite the glaring timeline issue.
Also When I Kissed the Teacher was a HUGE hit with me. If my graduation from Durham University is not every inch like that we have an issue.

Maybe they skimread the reviews and only managed to take away that it's similarly structured to The Godfather II. I must admit I'd've been EXTREMELY disappointed if I'd been expecting a mafia subplot among all the sun, sea, sand, and sizzling pop hits.

It made complete sense because Meryl didn't want to star in it - she doesn't do sequels and only agreed to a cameo, so they didn't have much choice. And personally I think Lily James and Amanda Seyfried more than made up for the lack of Meryl (though her character was ever-present in both timelines anyway). I took the beginning and ending similarities to be deliberate, same with the reuse of some of the biggest songs (which from watching a few interviews it seemed Abba basically insisted on), nearly all of which were done completely differently second time around, with the one similarity being deliberate to show Sophie's character progression. |
