Ah, the point I was making... Rather than report you to Admin let me explain why your post was offensive so you might learn something. I am well aware that you were charging me with racism. In this production the Fool was played by a Japanese actor. I said the Fool was bad in this production. You are saying that the reason I am saying this is that I am a racist, that is that there is no possible other reason for me to have taken the view, for example that the part was badly acted, or the director's interpretation of the part was ridiculous, or any number of valid reasons. To show up the stupidity of that view I should point out that I also thought Hawthorne was very poor in that production, do you think I'm saying that because he is English ? However, there is another implication from your comments, you must think that because the Fool was played by a Japanese actor then they should be above any normal criticism which might be directed at English actors. What they teach you in any diversity training course (you might try one) is that the assignment of a single characteristic to a single race or ethnic group is racist. That could be "All Mexicans are lazy" or "All Japanese are good actors" - the fact is that some are good, some are bad, some are average, they are all individuals just like us. Ponder upon that - equality means that they should be treated equally, no ? Of course also present in your post is a version of the tedious old political argument "Anyone who disagrees with me is Hitler" - the adolescent tendency to ascribe the worst possible motives to anyone who simply disagrees with one of your opinions. I have close family members who are immigrants to UK so the charge is doubly ridiculous. I don't expect an apology. You've gone from not reading between the lines, to now reading between lines that were never there. I love this! Could you expand on why you thought the fool was a "low point" particularly in that production then?

Could you expand on why you thought the fool was a "low point" particularly in that production then? I could but I don't have to. More instructive would be for you to explain why you looked at that actor and saw someone from Japan, in fact for you that is apparently such a defining characteristic you mentioned it when no-one else here had. I looked at them and just saw an actor. You may "love" being called out for your somewhat immature attitude to diversity in casting but accusing people of racism with no foundation or evidence at all could get you into a lot of trouble. Probably you think your initial comment on this thread was a joke. It wasn't.

If the revivals of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and 'Art' go ahead too at the Old Vic this year, it would an impressive year for the theatre.

It's your choice not to expand on why you thought that particular performance was a "new low" though. We will never know...

Why on earth are you the only person who sees "a new low" and is unable to trust that it simply means "a terrible performance"? I spend enough time sharing my opinions here as it is, if we're going to have to start writing essays justifying them all, I may as well just quit my job now.

If the revivals of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and 'Art' go ahead too at the Old Vic this year, it would an impressive year for the theatre. I've not heard about them. I'd have thought every actor one wanted to see in it had already been in Art - I'd be amazed if they could get a cast to sell out the Old Vic with it (I enjoyed it very much with Finney, Courtney and Stott). As for R and G, it's had a recent Nunn production in the West End and I got the impression that it didn't do too well. Does it need another revival; it's the sort of thing that would need top-name casting to succeed, i.e. an ex-Potter actor or two...

I think Warchus announced he was planning these productions when he announced his initial plans for the Old Vic. David Pugh has also been tweeting that 'Art' is being revived in 2016. If it is, I wouldn't be surprised if it's an Old Vic production that goes straight into the West End.

Hmm. Not sure about this one. King Lear’s a man whose politics come second to a complacent leeching off of the family wealth; who resorts to unnecessary anger, petty ad hominem insults and madness when it is suggested the necessary cutbacks happen to his way of life; whose country disintegrates due to his placing of inept acquaintances in major positions of power; and who instigates a massive, unnecessary and devastating division of nationhood and unity.
All Glenda Jackson’s got to draw on for this is five years watching David Cameron at work.
I jest, of course. Lear only had one fool.
P.S. Very interesting interview with Glenda Jackson about this here - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03rn2gd
P.P.S. Are the full dates out yet? Glenda’s one of my fave actresses, and if it runs a couple of months it might coincide with my birthday! Though, thinking about it, might not be the best play to celebrate getting older, as we, unburdened, crawl towards death.
P.P.P.S. And, of course, it’s not the first time she’s played a Shakespearean male role:

I'm keeping stumm on the subject of kazoos and wazoos in case I get accused of kazooism/wazooism.

How have I missed this thread???
Only seen her once on stage, in a play called "Rose" in 1980 written I think by TV's ubiquitous Andrew Davies???
My view, especially for those who haven't seen her on stage, is that when a legend reappears on stage after an absence of over twenty years you'd have to be pretty dumb to miss it. If you're a theatre lover that is.
I can recall Anthony Hopkins doing Lear, his spit landing on me as I was sitting in the front row at the National, and of course the recent Simon Russell Beale. Both were worthy efforts. The earlier version had (then) relative unknowns as Billy Nighy and Douglas Hodge in the cast. Probably my least favourite Shakespeare tragedy.
But I'll certainly try and see this!

I've never seen him on stage but I find him very difficult to watch on film. Not a fan. But I am ready to be reeducated if his role in this works.

33 performances in total, only 5 on Saturdays, and only one Saturday with both a matinee and an evening performance. I'm beginning to feel like I should spoil myself with a membership rather than trusting that I'll be fine as usual...

I increased mine to a priority friends in a panic (booking stalls for 6 people, JAYSUS!) but I think it should be fine with just a Friends booking for Thursday.

Well. Just had an email from the Old Vic to say that rehearsals are going well for 'King Lear'. So well in fact that the show is currently running at approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Yes kids, you read that right. 3 Hours. And 30 Minutes.
So it'll all be starting at 7pm instead so that we're all out by the following morning. And starting at 1pm for the matinee.
I'll just put it out there. Glenda Jackson is 80 years old. 80. Years. Old.
EDIT: Didn't realise there was a separate thread for 'King Lear'. Head there for the news folks. Nothing to see here.
