What do we reckon, enormous prices from the get-go, or an energetic work-out for our friend dynamic pricing?

What do we reckon, enormous prices from the get-go, or an energetic work-out for our friend dynamic pricing? The double: Enormous prices from the get-go, followed by a major work out from our friend, dynamic pricing.

Oh dear, this will not be good for my bank balance! A terrific actress who I saw several times on stage before her (rather wasted?) foray into politics!

Must admit when I read about this in The Times this morning I had to check the date to make sure April 1st hadn't come early !

Don't think I've ever seen her on stage. Famously even Peter Brook failed with her in Antony & Cleopatra. The Old Vic's last try at casting ancient actors in Shakespeare was a disaster, I suppose Fiona Shaw is on standby in case of problems this time.

I'm very excited, but it's a long time since she has been on stage (insert political joke here....). I really really hope it's wonderful...

Actually it turns out I have seen her on stage before also at the Old Vic - in Phedra in 1984 with the great Robert Eddison (one for the oldies) directed by Philip Prowse - I recall several life-sized dead horses crashing down onto the stage at the end - hope that's not an omen.

Deborah Warner has directed King Lear at least twice before, for her own Kick Theatre with Robert Demeger and for the NT with Brian Cox at the Lyttelton and on tour, (in rep with Richard Eyre's cross-cast Richard III with Ian McKellen).

I've seen two Lears, played by blokes, and I was bored both times.
Is it worth a punt again to see if Jackson's take can inspire me? Maybe, if I can get a £10 ticket.
I think I just don't like the play. So I'm not half as excited as the rest of you seem to be, I'm afraid. Given some of the shows that have been announced recently, I think I picked the right year to cut back on my theatre trips - seems like I won't be suffering much pain by missing stuff!

This is my second and last chance for it to be good, Jean so I am not judging you!
I saw the SRB one and think it is the worst thing I have seen SRB in (as seen in other threads I am a huge fan of his) but I hope Glenda can bring some vulnerability to this (Will she get naked like McKellen, for example?) and that there is some interesting casting alongside her.

Why, Marwood - you are not a gentleman! Hmm, did a feminist just accuse someone actively suggesting a woman shouldn't take her clothes off of ungallant behaviour? I might need to rethink this.

Yes, I like SRB in general too but he couldn't save it for me. Ditto Langella in Chichester.

I've seen two Lears, played by blokes, and I was bored both times. Seen it 14 times. 13.5 of them boring. Learnt my lesson. Giving this one a miss.

I am intrigued as to whether Jackson will play King Lear or Queen Lear. In many ways, the gender of the monarch doesn't really matter to this play as, for me, the play is about anger, rage and loss of power as well as dysfunctional family relationships.
Not being clear about gender is one of the things that infuriated me with the Peake Hamlet - as they changed pronouns for Polonia but not for Hamlet (who - from my perspective - was a female character in the piece)
I think there is much that can be explored with a female Lear. It certainly changes the dynamic with the three daughters and there is potential to look at whether the way Lear is treated is, in part, because of her gender.
It will be interesting to see how this develops.

I'm up to 11 Lears, and we've got a way to go before anyone betters McKellen or Jacobi for me. I keep plugging away anyway, though might skip the RSC's offering this year. The Greg & Ant Show is not my favourite.

Which was the 0.5 of a Lear you didn't find boring, Jan?
I think it's a genius idea. It's genuinely one of my tied first favourite Shakespeares. And it's a perfect fit for Jackson in theory; the "oh I have ta'en too little care of this" scenes should have amazing sincerity. And she was an incredible actor. But she will be 80 - not a bar of course but it'll be tough. How old was Jacobi?

Just to show I'm not sexist (and also because I don't want to be known as 'King Leer' - I don't want to see SRB nekkid either.
