Lesley Manville mentioned on Graham Norton's radio show on Saturday that she hoped to bring the recent Bristol production into the West End next year. She also said that Jeremy Irons would hopefully reprise his role, so it appears that he may have abandoned his reluctance to appear in it in the West End, which I recall he mentioned in an interview to promote the original Bristol run.

I must say I went in assuming I would agree with that but I thought Irons was just as good - it was the last weekend and he was thoroughly in control of the lines and the character. It made me long to see him in other roles - a shame Richard Eyre's already directed John Gabriel Borkman as he'd be ideal for that, as would Lesley Manville (in another role, of course). |

He puts his foot in it from time to time (and usually clarifies what he meant) but he's had a far longer and more prolific record supporting Amnesty and homeless charities. Unfair to put him down for one remark. |

He's also a fairly unashamed misogynist. We're all complex people who do good things and bad things no matter who we are, but I don't expect people to like me because I'm only awful some of the time, just as I don't have to like people because they're good some of the time.

Great news, saw this in Bristol and reasonable gap in production provides a good time to revisit.
However like Edward Albee sometimes one production can provide impetus to do another as we did this year with Virgina Woofe and Sylvia. So would be great if another theatre/s picked up Strange Interlude, Mourning Becomes Electra, Anna Christie or The Iceman Cometh

Couldn't get the link but the Bristol production and Manville in particular were excellent.
For those with access to BBC Iplayer, there is a great Radio 3 production of this play curently available to listen to with Anastasia Hille, Robert Glenister and Rupert Evans. Such riches from Radio 3 drama recently - the Anne Marie Duff Streetcar Named Desire was superb. Such a shame about that missing dimension

Lesley Manville mentioned this on Graham Norton's radio show a few months ago so not a great surprise. Saw the Jessica Lange/Gabriel Byrne/Michael Shannon production last year in NYC and a lot is to be said of doing a 'straight' version of this play. Looking forward to it v much.

Excellent news, think I've died and gone to heaven love both leads.  Saw Jeremy Irons as Harold Macmillan at the National a few years ago now and thought he was fab, being lovely to look at also helps in my shallow mind !  Wyndhams it is for me early next year. |

I always think its such a pity that more Irish productions of classics like this don't get seen in London despite having great stars in them. The Druid Long Days Journey Into Night with Marie Mullen, James Cromwell and Michael Esper was magnificent. We also had a wonderful John Gabriel Borkman at the Abbey with the late Alan Rickman, Lindsay Duncan and Fiona Shaw that was seen at BAM but not in London.
Lia Williams' Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Dublin Gate a few years ago was so magnificent that I doubt another actress will tackle in Dublin for a generation.
