^Ho ho. I always assumed the discount was also borne in part by the publishers (Nick Hern/ Oberon/ Faber/ Methuen/ etc.) who must sell very many more copies when it's available at the performances, probably tipping the balance to make the publication commercially viable. The playtexts are discounted at very many theatres, including smaller ones such as the Gate, the Bush, the Yard, The Other Room, Chapter, the Sherman Studio. But not (or not by much) at the NT, or at West End theatres (including Donmar Warehouse), Almeida and Hampstead (according to other posters above). It seems a shame because I automatically always buy a copy for £3 at the Royal Court and often for £5 at other theatres, but almost never for £8 or more at the NT, Almeida, etc., although I do sometimes later pay list price of £12 or whatever for texts of plays I've seen previously and want to read. A playwright friend explained this to me when his play was being published last year- it's something like a deal done between the theatre/publisher and author that they sell most of the intital print run at just above cost (so the £3-£5 programme ones you get) with the rest of the 'batch' getting returned to the publisher for sale at 'full price' after the event.
Or something approximating that, it was nearly a year ago I had that conversation. But also obviously relies on your venues being cooperative.
On the note of the NT bookshop/discounts, FYI teachers get a discount in there should that apply to anyone on here

There was a ticket available when I looked on Saturday, but I didn't want to pay £51 to see this, I'm a bit mystified as to how it's sold its run to be honest.

I'm a bit mystified as to how it's sold its run to be honest. National Treasure Olivia Colman (wonderful in almost everything and rarely does theatre these days), fab screen actress Olivia Williams, award-winning writer Lucy Kirkwood, relatively small venue...all reasons I tried to book back in May. And now with added Joseph Quinn too (new-ish, excellent and really nice as well! Got something of the young John Hurt and that generation, I think - I appreciate that's quite niche but it's another making-the-effort-box ticked for me)

And Twenty Twelve, W1A, Tyrannosaur, Hyde Park on Hudson, Cuban Fury, London Road, The Lobster and the upcoming Murder on the Orient Express etc . . . I'll wait for someone to be the first to post to say "I have absolutely no idea who Olivia Colman is" . .

Btw, on the 'limited to 2 tickets' thing, is that for the whole run?

It's a shame her resume doesn't have more of the likes of Downton Abbey, All The King's Men, Capturing Mary, David Copperfield, Talking Heads, A Fine Romance, As Time Goes By and Cranford on it . .

an awful lot of made for tv stuff there With cinema now dominated by Marvel and DC cgi-heavy comic book franchise movies, I think the consensus is that TV (especially the non-advert, Netflix type on your big HD TV screen) is where it's now at - it gives writers and actors more time to develop characters and so forth.

Btw, on the 'limited to 2 tickets' thing, is that for the whole run? *EDIT* Scrap that, completely wrong. Yes it is, got this error message: Tickets are limited to 2 per customer for this production. You will not be able to check out until you remove these tickets from your basket.

Tickets are limited to 2 per customer Thanks - I already have a ticket for the Saturday but was thinking of getting some for friends, but I think I'll be selfish because I may want to see it again myself later in the run and it probably isn't their sort of thing (the long rehearsal period suggests a long play, too).

Damn, completely missed this chance and I've been checking the website multiple times daily for weeks. Once again showing sold out for the entire run - and no, it wasn't OC which made me want to book.

Yes, that's exactly what I tried, peggs - first with Chrome, then Edge A friend's just managed after several failed attempts - he was using an ipad with no luck, so switched to a PC. I got through on a Mac desktop.
