It does occur to me that no one ever uses a mediocre or flat out terrible play from a male playwright (of which there are many) as representing "male playwrights" (or arguments pro/con) as a species.
Otoh the chap sitting next to me grabbed my arm in the interval, so desperate was he to share his almost evangelical love for "the best first half he's ever seen" so horses for courses and all that.

Saw it tonight. Meh. Felt like a bad episode of eastenders with added science? Calling it "Science" Is debatable

Half of it was inaudible
And the boyfriend
Was mainly totally incomprehensible
Again
These are basic things to get right in a small venue
To be able to hear the lines
It's not looking good for Norris
Perhaps Alan Bennett
Can help him out

Reckon you got it spot on your emimence! Wonder if the herb ever pays for a ticket! Puzzles me why he nothers going when he clearly doesnt enjoy the experience. Time to find a new hobby? Why do people eat sh*t food like McDonald's Or attend a job they can't abide Or go out drinking time and time again And then regret it he next day Or buy things they can't afford on credit Or tolerate a relationship they aren't happy in As you may well see there were 3 productions I saw in a row this very month which I adore and embodied theatrical perfection For me that is enough of an advantage and I live in hope I also don't then have to chase to see sold out shows or wait until they transfer to the WE I also have a personal and/or professional obligation to see much of what I attend I hope this is a satisfactory explanation for you

Does anyone have the vocabulary that I clearly lack to tell someone that they are the most intolerable, judgemental person one should ever fear to encounter and they are a disgrace to the, by contrast, normally incredibly inclusive, understanding and tolerant theatre community without breaking the site rules about "personal abuse"?

Why don't you write a play about it? If it's any good We can have a whip round on the forum to stage it 😂

Play nicely. Comments above are mean and attacking the person. Parsley gives us his opinions on plays and it's fine to disagree with these but we should always respect someone's right to hold an opinion and not attack personally. Im just giving my opinion, where is it nasty? Rolls eye a lot.

Rolls eye a lot. 3 plays I saw in last 2 weeks and loved Out of 5 Didn't find a thing wrong with those 3 So your comments are inaccurate Yet you choose to ignore that in order to post your own agenda Doubt you have seen that many shows in the same period of time Probably waiting to be told what to see Or for a discount But thanks for your concerns about my potential enjoyment

I recommend the ignore function. It makes the board a much more pleasant place and stops you getting drawn into arguments or baited into breaking the board rules.

I am not sure whether Parsley craves the backbiting or not, but I for one think he/she adds a lot of interesting colour to this forum.

Just got back from seeing it tonight and purposely went in not knowing much and I have to say I did enjoy it. I found the story very engaging and all the actors were good and especially Olivia Williams and Coleman who had great chemistry and I really empathised with them. Some parts of the play I found a tad emotional and it touched many topics and all the character were complex and not one dimetional and all had their flaws. I really liked the staging and design and use of projection and other sound and lighting, all in all this was a good play and also very intertesting . Some of the science got a but confusing but I liked the breaking of the 4th wall. I have also thought that national has lots of ensemble and non speaking roles for people to bring props on. This, common and angels. May post more about it after I have had a sleep to think about it .

Oh dear.
Watched this tonight and it's not good. Some sort of Nick Payne attempt to meld science and relationships, but it never unites and, more fatally, is never interesting. It's also far. too. long.
Amusing dialogue at first, and Colman gets to do her full range within the 3hrs, sometimes within a scene. The audience love her and lap up every look and line. Williams is given much less, and acting wise comes across quite weak for some reason. The man playing the Swiss boyfriend has the strangest accent I've ver heard on a stage, and is also struggling with his acting. The 3 small parts are pointless and ultimately those actors are reduced to (un)glorified stage managers dragging on the different bits of set. The son was good, but one note. His storyline (they claim to be interlinked but are quite separate) started well, then drifted into nothingness. The mother character had some funny lines, but was annoying. In fact, they were all annoying. Paul Hilton is completely wasted, and speaks two long monologues away from everyone else, that ultimately lead to some crazy lighting and projections (be wowed and awed audience!) but cannot hide the fact that what he's having to speak is dull, and not linked enough to the relationship drama/sitcom.
The direction by Rufus Norris is fine, the set whirs into life when the script is at its worst, trying to blind an audience with lighting and sound, but it's hard to see past the fact the script by Kirkwood is bad. Had she stuck with just the relationship drama, this might have worked.
But, like Common, this script should have been edited and fixed before rehearsals began, or at the latest during rehearsals. What is the NT's fear of cutting texts before they reach a paying audience? I'm sure Duff/Colman/Williams wouldn't care if their parts were cut if it resulted in better plays.
If you like Swiss jokes, and Higgs Boson/CERN jokes, and watching Colman do funny/sad/crying/drunk, and completely unbelievable events happening with no one batting an eyelid when they're resolved by the next scene, you'll enjoy it.
If you like good plays, which weave subjects like science and humanity together seamlessly and ask its audience big questions whilst making you feel for all the characters, you won't find any of that in Mosquitoes.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it You summed up exactly what I thought In a more diplomatic way It is a dreadfully long evening And it could have ended about ten times before it actually did The only script is so pants I am not sure if the car crash acting is a symptom of this What I do know It's not Chimerica And just goes to show how "good" playwrights Can have a right balls up

In many ways
It reminded of Consent
Another new play by an acclaimed female playwright
Which had an excellent cast
And was about as appealing as a skid mark on the toilet pan
Are all these actors SO very desperate?
Poor poor them
I mean
Better to shut the place down
Than have this and that and Salome

I suspect this thread will prove to be much more gripping than the play itself.
I must agree though that Norris is not exactly inspiring too much excitement so far. If Follies doesn't deliver the goods, I'll be incredibly disappointed.

I enjoyed it more than some on here but completely understand the reservations many have.
What I do not understand, however, is why the playwright's gender must be so frequently mentioned. So frustratingly antiquated.

Looks like they have added an extra seat in the pit, as almost all shows in September have a ticket available in the first row.

Being brief cos on keyboard designed for mice but I really enjoyed it, love its ambition even though I don't think it completely worked . Some fab scenes specially Jenny and Luke , other bits reminded me of life of Galileo - will get text when out next week. First trip to ford an and great sight lines from pit dorfman autocorrect ! But feet in back thing, yes they should tell punters not to stick feet onto chair in front!
