I booked for Killology, but am not exactly looking forward to it; it sounds impressive but gruelling. A tough day altogether, actually, as that's the matinee whilst in the evening I'm seeing Terror at the Lyric Hammersmith. I'll have to find a cheerful film to see first.

There's been much debate among colleagues who have seen this about various aspects, which has been lovely to overhear and see the variety of responses even though I won't manage to see it myself.
His Iphigenia in Splott is also now available in Spanish! having been translated for I think a production in Mexico!

The Royal Court has released more tickets for the previously sold out run of this. Ignore the fact the booking site says "Day Seats Only" and go through to the date list to book.

The desire and instinct for responsibility of men in the modern age ultimately rejected. Man it was depressing. But good. Don't for a second expect the play the blurb hints at.

After what happened this week
This play is f***ing pathetic
And totally in bad taste
The acting is horrific
Screaming
One actor looks like he has had a stroke
Or Bells Palsy
And another has a weird campy thing going on
Some of the dialogue is laughable
It's like a sh*t version of a good Philip Ridley play
The fact that the three characters barely speak to each other says enough
Is it shocking?
It is challenging?
It's pathetic

I thought this was rather excellent. A bit too long, yet despite that it never dragged. Oddly paced, the interval comes about 100 mins in, meaning the second act is very short. Great performances, great acting, lovely to see monologues on stage. I also like that he doesn't spoonfeed the audience the piece and you have to do some working out in your head.

I saw this on Saturday night and thought it was great, though gruelling, and certainly sparked off some debate in the interval (I'd like to have joined in but it's London and you never know what reaction you're going to get). Oddly paced, the interval comes about 100 mins in I thought it might have been even stronger if a bit shorter, maybe 80 or 90 mins straight through without the interval. |

OK, I knew this was said to be a tough watch, but just how gruesome is it, please? As a recent reviewer mentioned trying not to be sick, and walk-outs at the interval. I've liked Gary Owen's previous work but I am squeamish when it comes to deliberate nastiness and would rather know now, return my ticket (which someone else will doubtless snap up due to demand) and use the scarce time to see something else, than be unable to stomach it on the day and have my plans go pear-shaped.

There's nothing physically gruesome, it's all in the descriptions. So I guess it very much depends on how well you deal with hearing about violence, both actual and inferred.

Going into more details behind the spoiler tag, please only look if you've already seen the play or you really do need to go in forewarned and thus forearmed: For my money, the very worst parts were descriptions of a dog fight (not very long, but detailed enough to be upsetting) and a road traffic incident (I'm not particularly squeamish myself, but that's the bit that set my teeth on edge). There's also a video game frequently mentioned in the play that is basically gruesome and OTT ways to kill people but although it's fairly explicit about that, it didn't go into huge amounts of detail, and the level of separation between reality and video game may well prove enough to cartoonify (if you will) the violence mentioned. However we do hear audio footage of someone screaming who we know has had violence enacted on them, that could be a little hard to take. There's no blood shown anywhere and only one moment of violence that is so mild it's almost not worth mentioning. Less spoilerish: if you can make it to the interval, you can make it to the end. If that helps anyone. It's worth mentioning, while we're here, that the Royal Court is aware that some of their plays touch upon things that individuals may find difficult to deal with and thus could use a heads-up to get themselves ready to face it, and have this page linked from pretty much all of its production pages: royalcourttheatre.com/your-visit/trigger-warnings/ It's nice to see someone who actually understands what a trigger warning is, and if you ever do feel like you need to check with the theatre before committing to a play, it sounds like you'll be treated with understanding and respect. |

Yep all in the descriptions which are quite graphic and violent. The whole point I suppose is that they are as nasty and violent as you can get. If you can sit through an episode of Game Of Thrones you'll probably be fine. I found myself quite desensitised by it all, where the older members of the audience around me where gasping and tutting and some crying. To some extent that generational gap is what the whole play is about.
