I'm surprised there is no extra security about at stage doors etc, especially because at the best of times you don't know who the killer could be It seems worth a reminder at this point that you are as likely to die of a bee sting as a terrorist attack. They are exceedingly rare events. I am aware of that of course, but lets not also forget that less than a year ago Christina Grimmie, and American recording artist, got murdered at a meet and greet at the age of just 22 and all she did was open her arms out to give someone a hug and she got shot to death. I know its a rarity, of course I do, but it does happen.

I am at the New Victoria Theatre Woking. Wandering in from the shopping centre security asked to see my bag. Once in the theatre I was down by the doors that lead directly from outside and asked about them as there was no security. I presumed they must now be exit only. I was told there should be 2 security guys but one is off. The doors are an entrance still (people are now streaming in) but no security for this entrance is probably not a worry as it is a quiet evening.

One of our local theatres (provincial) has banned large bags, announced bag searches and closed the cloakroom.

Surprised not to see any police when I went into town this morning, given the Champions League invasion has begun. We have however had a new app launched which tells you evacuation routes in the event of an incident. Grim.

ROH evacuated for a fire alert about 1 hour in. On returning from outside they went through full bag checks again for all (ROH has now restricted to smaller bag sizes). Still to get everyone out and back in again only took 35 minutes which is not bad.

I'm surprised there is no extra security about at stage doors etc, especially because at the best of times you don't know who the killer could be, and a lot of stage doors are just open spaces where anyone can get to you. Especially the ones at like Wicked and Dreamgirls, where the stage door gets very crowded very fast. Wicked always had barriers and security often walk "big name" stars to their cars. On the other hand I've heard of stars of equal stature being seen on tube after performances so it all depends on the performer and their demands. There was the time when some nutter thumped Leona Lewis at a CD signing too. Someone at B'ham Hippodrome told me that barriers and extra security at SD is only laid on if the Visiting Company requests it. As regards bag sizes in theatres, is it just a general bigger than a certain size and it goes into the Cloak Room type policy theatres are using as larger handbags could be an issue for a number of ladies. The RSC had not done bag checks until last week yet most other major Midland Theates did.

Well it's already 'interesting' in Cardiff with the Champions League descending...working inside the 'Festival Village' zone I had to walk through 4 security checkpoints to get to work (not active yet although the roads are closed) Everywhere full of Police/Security, and it seems if we go out at lunchtime we'll be getting bag searched and/or ID'd to get out/in. Also as I opened the window I realised the loading bay was full of armed police obviously getting ready for a search.
As much as I'm muttering about road closures and general chaos, if we do have to have this madness happening I'm glad Police/Security is tight. Just wish I didn't have to battle with it to get a sandwich...

The National Theatre was depressing yesterday afternoon. All doors except the main ones closed (and, though I had a bag, I wasn't searched and didn't see anyone making any effort to do searches. Oh, wait, one guard did ask a random to stop.). Kind of unfortunate that after all that money spent on Open Up and make the building "permeable" they're being forced to Close Down.

Design all wrong. They should have gone for big doors, one set of all across big doors into a lovely foyer. Instead we have had to scurry through corners and negotiate dark corners all these years. Hence present situation.

Well security at the Dorfman seems to be different to the rest of the NT. You can enter the foyer without a check and if your bag meets the NT size limit it seems you can go into the auditorium without a check. However, if you need to check your bag into the cloakroom then there is a security guy there checking it before the cloakroom guy takes it.

One thing that occurs to me is do the staff have any idea what they are searching for? My handbag is a veritable cornucopia, but all it ever gets is a cursory glance inside or quick squish. I've never had to explain what anything is. What would they consider dangerous?

What would they consider dangerous? A bomb, perhaps?

What would they consider dangerous? A bomb, perhaps? Well, obviously! But that's my point, the checks I have undergone are totally insufficient to find anything suspicious.

What would they consider dangerous? A bomb, perhaps? Most people wouldn't recognise a bomb if they saw one, unless the bag was being carried by Wile E. Coyote.

The sad thing is, for the most part, it is just a quick glance because it is so busy. Unless a cerrified security guard, they are not actually allowed to go through your bag themselves, just a quick torch in and if they want a rummage, they ask you to do it. Thats why Front of House staff who act as door people only really have a glance.

I got basic training to do security ages ago and it was really interesting; tactics to look out for included putting vibrators at the top of a bag so the security guard was embarrassed and just waved you through hurriedly!
But it's behaviour when the bag is being checked that people are looking out for, not just what's in the bag itself.

You can always tell when I'm feeling annoyed about bag searches, because I'll make sure all my sanitary products are at the top of the bag. Never occurred to me to use a sex toy for the same reason, maybe I'll get myself a cheap one! If nothing else, at least I should then be able to sneak Haribo into Cursed Child.

...at least I should then be able to sneak Haribo into Cursed Child. An unusual name for a sex toy but I ain't here to judge!

Are you suggesting that Cursed Child is a less unique name for my lady garden than I'd previously suspected? How disappointing.

I always just open my bag and say "sorry for the most hidiously boring bag ever", they laugh and have a glance and then move on. Allthough I did have a guard, can't remember which theatre, ask me how the book I had in my bag was. And as it was a friends book I was reading, it was nice to be able to recommend it!

I had one of those yellow banana cases in my bag when I went to see Cursed Child. The bag checker had apparently never seen one before, so we had the following conversation: Bag checker: What's that?! Me: A banana case. Bag checker: A banana case?!?! What's inside it? Me: *opening it* A banana. Bag checker: !!!
