Saw the US tour in Toronto last year, like any other tour constrained by different house sizes, like girl falls from ceiling onto stage instead of aisle in audience, lasers have gone for the chokey, these are replaced by light beams from the stage. Was a bit underwhelmed, they will bring these changes to the tour to the UK.
Not surprised it is touring and bet it is doing steady business in the West End.

I heard this was booked into Plymouth in January 2018. I was told this 18 months ago so things could have changed.

I also know of a Scottish theatre that has this booked in too. Hopefully the London production doesn't close for it

Great to see this is touring! A return visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon would be great also, but I doubt that would happen.
I just hope they don't put in the awful overture that was used for the Broadway production (and maybe US and Australian tours). Nor do I think the front cloth is particularly necessary.

Interesting to hear about the changes, thanks for the insight Phantom of London. The tour has had venues booked for a couple of years now so that probably stacks up @trekkiemonster and cheesy116  The London production is still selling very well indeed, and won't be closing for the tour. The touring production will be doing long sit downs in major venues, not dissimilar to the original Lion King and Wicked tours. |

I just think one day it would be nice for it to return to the RSC as that's where it premiered (although technically it was at the Courtyard which I think has changed to something more intimate now). Thanks Daniel, that's great to hear then, I have a habit of going to tours near me on several occasions in one stop so say goodbye to my bank balance! I love this show. The USA Tour finishes in a few months so that's perfect timing to get the set over here for the UK Tour as the job applications all state the job is from October 2017-August 2019 |

I did not expect this to tour so soon. The Bord Gais in Dublin has hinted a few times that a big family musical will be there Christmas show this year? Possibly this?

Yeah, I think the biggest issue with Matilda and the RSC will be that the tour will be a proscenium arch based design, whereas originally at the RSC it was thrust stage. I agree though, it's lovely when Productions go full circle and return to where they started. |

Afraid I have no intel on Dublin, but it makes sense. The Stage Manager advert says starting in October, so that gives rehearsal time before a Christmas opening. I can't think of any other "big family musicals" that are yet to announce a tour that fit that time frame! |

This will get first choice of venues, regional houses would bite your hand off to have this, especially for a Christmas sit down. No doubt and suspect when the tour is announced you will see this go in the usual venues, such as: Manchester, Palace; Birmingham, Hippodrome; Southampton, Mayflower; Edinburgh, Playhouse; Liverpool, Empire; Sunderland, Empire, Dublin, Bord Gras; Bristol Hippodrome and Bradford, Alhambra. Couldn't see this going into Milton Keynes, Canterbury or Woking too close to London.
Could do a 2nd road trip, depending how successful this will be.
Interesting when Matilda toured the States, it only done short stops, think something like 2 weeks was the longest, probably learned from the Billy Elliot tour that was a disaster and lost loads in cash.

Billy was expensive to run and doing long runs meant they lost money, they eventually retooled it to make it viable. Wicked did Milton Keynes so it's possible Matilda could go there but I doubt it. If they don't do Bradford, I could see them going to The Grand in Leeds, also, the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh might be an option if they don't go to the Playhouse. The WMC in Cardiff is a dead cert as well and perhaps the Lowry. |
