Well, the show has been publicised COMPLETELY off the back of Amber, and her appearances on several very high profile tv programmes singing that one iconic song. I think it's safe to assume that a lot of people have booked to see her over and above the show. The show would have been publicised off the back of whoever was Effie as it's the big sing role in the show. Most people in the UK don't have a clue who Amber is, and Glee was a few years ago now so even that connection only goes so far in terms of publicity. Amber is not a name here like Sheridan is. I agree, Sheridan could be considered a national treasure in England but she is a household name anyway. Lots of people know her from the TV dramas and programmes she's been in. Unless you watched Glee or followed theatre then you probably haven't heard of Amber Riley so that's probably why there hasn't been such an uproar about her missing the shows. And also like Daniel said, it hasn't been advertised with her as 'AMBER RILEY IN DREAMGIRLS' unlike it was 'SHERIDAN SMITH IN FUNNY GIRL'. Her name doesn't appear on any posters or on the theatre front of house so it is advertised as the show rather than her in the show.

Still the box office has had to deal with lots of upset people who were hoping to see Amber Riley and the fact remains she has only managed a few shows, may be 10 or less, since the show started.
Call me cynical but I'm sure she'll be fully recovered in a couple of weeks, just in time to do the performances that will be attended by the Oliviers panel. After that she will probably be indisposed again.

Each to their own, I prefer to have a slightly less cynical view on life (particularly in respect of the future as I'm not psychic), especially when there's no evidence whatsoever to suggest anything other than Amber is actually ill!

Interesting that she mentioned on tv last night how dreadfully homesick she was.... Oh give her a break, would you not be? I worked on the other side of the world for 6 months and had no qualms with telling everyone I was homesick! Doesn't mean I didn't like my job or want to continue doing my job! I'm starting to think certain people here are forgetting that musical theatre performers are human...

I think that caught up with her and that's why she's ill now.

Interpret that as you wish but dont shoot the messenger eh?

That statement the other day said she was entering the last few days of recovery. I expect she will probably be back tomorrow.

Pneumonia is a particularly serious illness - and deceptive. Just when you think it is over, it strikes back, and kills. I'm sure Ms R wants to perform, but I'm even more certain her doctors are doing the only sensible thing. I hope because she was meant to be working around Christmas that her family were going to be over as being ill and alone in a strange country is terrible.

To around 40% of the people going to the theatre in London Sheridan Smith means little as she is rather unknown outside your island. Amber Riley on the other hand is well known.

Wow. They're really working her hard. What about Karen Mav?!?! Marisha is proving to be very consistant, she has done literally every show since her first performances on December 29th, so they may as well keep her around if she is getting the amazing reception she has been receiving . Karen was ill I think according to her twitter, but that was like January 3rd, so maybe she is still not well enough to go on?

I really don't think she is. Glee is the only major thing she's done that has had wide coverage here, and it appealed to a fairly niche audience, certainly not all of the average theatregoers who aren't musicals mega fans.
Anyway, the point is that Funny Girl was advertised with Sheridan Smith above the title, all the marketing centered on her. Amber Riley's name doesn't appear on the Dreamgirls posters, it's the show that is the star, not her alone.

Sorry if I came across rude to you, I just don't like it when people actively avoid the understudies because of a star casting (we know a few!) but glad to hear you intend on seeing all.

Amber Riley's name doesn't appear on the Dreamgirls posters, it's the show that is the star, not her alone. The multi-award winning Glee has been seen by millions of people worldwide. Miss Smith has been seen mainly on ITV in a red wig doing a scouse accent. The niche audience you speak of are the very people buying tickets to see Amber in Dreamgirls.
