I also think the use of the term 'standby/alternate' is just to calm the situation when people kick off that Amber isn't on. 'Understudy' doesn't sound quite so good. It also doesn't come with the implication of a regular schedule, like standby/alternate. (Moreso alternate.) I doubt non-regular theatregoers would attribute any implication to either of those words!

So I've just booked to see this on Monday and I can't quite believe it...dynamic pricing wins the day once again!
Rear side Dress circle and front upper circle all reduced to £39.50, originally £72.50/£59.50/£49.50...feel like I've got myself a bargain! I plumped for N4 in the Dress, legroom supposedly terrible which may be an issue for 6 foot me, but I didn't want a handrail in sight.
Hopefully Amber will be back but not the end of the world if not, just excited to see the show!

Video of Marisha singing the final 'Dreamgirls' song in Dallas.
Her voice is amazing!! I feel so happy for her as this is her big break and people now know who she is as not many of us did before she came to the UK. So glad for her, I really wanted to see Amber perform but now I'm not overly bothered who we get.

She does sound great it must be said! I love her soul voice and from the clip below, you could really hear the emotion in her voice and everything. Star in the making and I hope she does more shows now in London. She is a permanent alternate right, not a temporary one?

She was never to be a temp, she is staying as alternare even once Amber returns.

I'd been looking forward to this for ages, changed tickets twice but tonight decided to actually go regardless of who was on. It's a very slick production, but underwhelmed by Marisha. I thought she was much better in Act 2 than Act 1 and her 'And I Am Telling You' was good, but was hoping for more. I've read on here of standing ovations mid song, but only a handful stood at the end of it. I Am Changing was excellent. I loved Joe Aaron Reid's voice, could listen to him sing anything, but felt his acting didnt match his voice. Liisi LaFontaine was disappoining as Deena (her father was voiceover LEGEND, Don Lafontaine!!) Why the huge big set for 'Stepping....' only for it never to be used again. Fantastic costumes and the final curtain, and the way it rose in a semi circle was stunning! In fact we talked more about the curtain than anything else. It would look amazing in my flat I want to go back and see it with Amber, hoping she can bring some star quality to the role.

Ruths twitter last night had an interesting post about people taking what's hers but she says in a separate tweet she will be on soon.

The saga continues. So she is still involved with the show? Well last we heard there were now only two alternates...so what, she is just a cover or something now? A standby?
Are they going to do a performance where every song is performed by a different Effie?

There are too many "alternates" here. I hope there isn't a long term problem with Amber, but it's beginning to look like it.

I hope she is back by Wednesday. I am interested to see Marisha but i'd like to see the show first of all with it's intended lead. Then try the other ones.

Lily Frazer is on for Deena this week, not Liisi I only saw a sign saying that Marisha was on as Effie, so I presumed all the others were in their normal roles. Nothing in the programme either. Interesting that Sonia Friedman was in the box taking notes during the show.

Is Ruth saying she believes Marisha is trying to steal her job? If so, there must be some serious egos and bitchiness backstage.

Also, what if that first tweet has absolutely nothing to do with Dreamgirls?

Amber needs to take two days off instead of one. One alternate could do Wednesday matinee, and the other Saturday matinee. To have three alternates (and one ensemble member understudy!) is somewhat of an overkill. These girls need to be regularly going on to be able to muster this. Being in a West End show and singing these songs is like working a muscle, if you do it regularly with ample rest, you can get better and stronger at it.

That first tweet was written at 1:18am... maybe Ruth was sipping that Jesus juice and feeling sassy. May also have nothing to do with Dreamgirls.

Being in a West End show and singing these songs is like working a muscle, if you do it regularly with ample rest, you can get better and stronger at it. I really agree that Amber needs two days off too but I think it shouldn't be the Saturday matinee. Do what The Bodyguard did with Beverley and give her Wednesday and Monday off - 6 shows instead of one. If there are only two alternates then one can play each show.
As for Ruth, maybe its what her tweet said and she just hasn't had enough rehearsal time and doesn't feel ready to go on yet? But I think Marisha must be the main alternate now since Karen hasn't performed a single show since Marisha started playing Effie.
I've said this before but I am glad Candace is 2nd cover Lorell and has played her because it seems highly unlikely she'll get on as Effie unless Amber and the 3 alternates are off. It is a shame for Candace but atleast she is playing Lorell still instead of no one?

It all sounds like a superb subject for a musical in its own right!
