I hope it's not And i am telling you.....obviously i've heard her singing it on Glee but i'd rather not have a recording before i hear/see her live in the show. That seems to me a little odd.

LOL or the most obvious choice because it's the most popular song from the entire show, let alone a popular song to begin with. But maybe it could be One Night Only.

I don't like hearing something until I have seen it live if I can help it. If I do have a quick listen, I try to stay clear of any recording for months before seeing something.

But in this case, it doesn't even apply because it's a revival with at least two major English recordings (OBC and live concert) and a film soundtrack with very famous people (and the lead has already recorded two songs from the show in Glee). So essentially the songs are known to begin with. But if you're not into it, it should be easy to avoid any filmed or recorded promotional material before you see the show.

I really liked it. I thought she bought some nice shading to it and will only sound better with an orchestra behind it.
I really hope they keep the quick change moment in the song that happened in the original Broadway run.

I find it ok but not amazing. Hopefully she'll sound better with a full orchestra.

Lacks "richness". Sounds a bit reedy in parts I might venture! Go large or go home Amber!

it's not that she can't sing, it's that Effie is a rollercoaster, you can't do a half-assed version like this and get away with it.

How far ahead of opening would we expect rehearsals to begin for a show of this sort of scale? I imagine she starts it in the US then comes over to join in with cast rehearsals nearer to opening?

I'm in the 'It was OK' camp and yes she can obviously sing. There's just no variation to it, like she was only focusing on hitting the big notes. I'm sure it'll sound better in person and with an orchestra/experience, but that video just doesn't have the oomph that I was hoping for.

Bet she doesn't do the full run though... Admittedly that was the first thing I said to my OH after watching.

Rehearsals start mid September I think. Not 100% sure though. Joe Aaron Reid mentioned it the other day but I can't quite remember (my memory clearly isn't what it used to be).

my memory clearly isn't what it used to be If you still remember that your memory used to be better, it really can't be that bad, right?

Listen, all is entitled to their opinion blah blah blah..but I'm cross-eyed reading that people are going "meh" on Amber's killer vocals and yet satisfied with Sheridan Smith's disastrous singing.

I actually quite like it. She has a very clear voice and can really sing. I think she can make of Effie something very different than what we are used to.
Her voice is naturally a little soft, straight, clean and clear. Maybe she interprets the role more like that too. Still sassy but in a different way. Not the lame standard way. I am kind of tired of the Effies wailing, screaming and exploding, headrolls, talk to the hand, the louder and uglier the better. Almost like a caricature. That is not what singing is. I need more than that. In fact, I hope she softens it up even more. Her first lines for example can be much more intimate and bell-like, more head voice. It makes Effie more like a real person in my opinion.
With that said, I hope she is a good enough actress, because her acting did not really impress me in Glee.
Edit: After watching it again, I think she would benefit more from an intimate version of the song. It is like she is using a loudness that is not natural for her voice. I hope she looks for her own quality instead of trying to imitate the loudness or aggressiveness of previous Effies.
