Unfortunately most of the article was behind a paywall, so I could only read the first sentence - that Papa's gonna be Mama and that they are looking for performers now. If more information trickles through, I'll share it here. I'm still in their press mailing list too, which helps!

Actually I've found another paper that had the full story online. Nothing much otherwise, though:
"New songs, new technology, new roles: The creative team in London has been working for weeks" - I guess what they refer to are the workshop performances at the Other Palace.

Ah brilliant thanks! So it looks as if the Other Palace version may be getting it's first formal outing in Germany. God, wondering if I can afford to go to Bochum twice in 2018 - deffo want to see the old version pre May it it's soon to be no more and would also like to go and see how the new version goes down there!

Just go on the last weekend of the current cast and see the first show of the new cast and changes? That way you can see both shows in one trip. Think it’s the end of May.

Definitely need to get there before they change this - one of the main reasons I wanted to go was that it's the version I remember most fondly, but in German.

Can't quite believe the 'new' Bochum CD which we all waited so long for (and I absolutely love) is going to be out of date so soon. Imagine would be way too optimistic to hope for a 30th anniversary one?
Btw, what did people think of ALW's comment at The Other Palace that the project was kickstarted by him seeing the show in Bochum and "not recognising the orchestrations" he was hearing? I find it so odd. Bochum orchestrations were updated for the 25th from the (then new) UK tour orchestrations which ALW did himself this time without David Cullen's help. They can be heard on the 25th CD. But more importantly they have not changed in Bochum since then - the show, to my ears anyway, has sounded identical for the last 4.5 years. Very odd. ALW, genius though he is, does say some funny things!

So I think unfortunately they have the goodbye shows on the Sunday and the new cast don't open until the Wednesday! Might aim for the former and then go later in year when new version bedded in.

Should also keep an eye out for various discount options throughout the year. Word on the street (well, among German fans) is that there's likely to be some sort of "30,000 tickets for 30 Euro each for the 30th anniversary year" dealio or something.
I forked out full price for my retro trip this year because I couldn't be bothered to wait for a discount, especially after various people I had not counted on decided to tag along (such is the lure of the show still). But I'll definitely look out for discounts next year before I venture again (likely on my own).
They are also planning a repeat of an English-language performance for those of you who care about that.

Dear god. I hope they don't add I Got Me into the show. Yes it will be in the 2018 version. I actually liked it and had it stuck in my head for ages after. It will replace a whole lotta locomotion. Starlight Express will have the “when the night is darkest” lyrics and the rap will be totally accapella with lyrics similar to the 90s version. All traces of David yasbek have been removed and the new orchestrations are based more on the original version

No need to go to Germany to see the new version. It will be in the UK in 2018 and they are casting at the moment.
It was amazing off skates. Can’t wait to see it on skates.
Hope they get Electra some red high heel skates 😜 they are going to be playing more on his “ac/dc” side of his character.

Expected as much, but still hoped it wouldn’t be Is ok. ALW will have strict licensing conditions and they will have to stick to his updated score and staging. We have had strict condition on our amautur production next month. RUG won’t let it go ahead unless the lord is happy with it!

If the Lord is happy with the 3D race segments in the Kenwright version, then that's a crying shame.
Starlight needs a 30th anniversary celebration at the O2. Fully staged, racetracks and all. Give it what it deserves.

Give it what it deserves. Totally agree the 02 would be perfect for a anniversary performance. In our production next month we are building a racetrack around the stalls and doing the races live without any video or projection. RUG are coming to watch and may just prove to them in the right venue where the seating can be removed or arranged bespoke that live racing could be done!

Sounds really great, good for you guys for presenting it in the best way that you can. The problem with Kenwright shows is that everything is as cheap as possible (I'm not necessarily criticising cheap productions here, they keep ticket prices lower and that's needed), so I really can't see him investing the time money and effort in having to bespokely design racetracks for every venue, when in his mind I'm sure the 3D sequences are perfectly adequate. Equally, he is renowned for being super tight when it comes to seating and capacities. For example restricting concessions and staff deals even when shows are empty (from personal experience, 300 seats out of 1800 sold for Evita and he wouldn't even give staff a discount), so I'd be massively surprised if, additional costs aside, he gave the go-ahead to remove seats (that may or may not sell) in order to add a racetrack that he most likely deems unnecessary. Sorry to rant.

I liked a lot of the changes, and didn't mind I Got Me as much as most did, but I hated the changes to Starlight Express. Why?

Gosh, they are a bit second tier aren’t they? Does no one want it? These are the old tour dates..... It did do all the big tour venues (Manchester/Liverpool/Edinburgh/Bristol etc) as well as the smaller ones!

I wonder if some of the workshop cast will do the tour? Be great if they did. George Ure I thought was fab! Christina Bennington I guess may still be doing Bat Out Of Hell.
