A person at the BAFTAS making quips (without actually mentioning Sheridan by name), and newspapers reporting in their customary hyperbolic way on an incident at a performance does not equate to bullying.
Twitter, by its very nature, involves people spouting off about things in which they are not involved.
Sheridan Smith may feel she is getting unwanted attention, or comments she feels are unjustified or bruising to her ego, but that doesn't make it bullying. Every negative comment is not immediately "bullying".
Any news on how the show was last night? Did anyone grab a last minute ticket?

I have colleagues who had lots of time off when their parents had terminal cancer, and I've had colleagues who were signed off work due to stress and anxiety and other mental health crises. Please do not make light of these situations. I'm familiar with dealing with such diagnoses within my immediate family so I don't make light, thank you. I do however make light of yet another actor's histrionics which are then put down to their "insecurity". If Sheridan thinks she's not worthy of her acting career (which is what she's said in interviews) perhaps she should consider a different one. If all the actors who felt insecure were to quit, surely the stages would be half-empty! ;-)

I just rang my boss to ask if I could have the rest of the week off because I'm feeling insecure. Didn't get very far! I have colleagues who had lots of time off when their parents had terminal cancer, and I've had colleagues who were signed off work due to stress and anxiety and other mental health crises. Please do not make light of these situations. You say that but there's a reasonably well-known actress battling cancer who is having regular treatment during the day and still turning up for work at night as she tours the UK. No I'm not saying who, nor am I suggesting having a parent battling such a horrific disease is remotely easy, but she's not helping herself by lashing out, behaving so erratically or hitting the self-destruct button so regularly. It's a shame. I didn't rate her in the show, but she's a talented girl but people will start to forget her abilities and only know her for being a mess.

People are people. People have meltdowns and bad periods in their lives. Famous people are still people and have meltdowns too, they're just usually heavily managed and shielded from the public eye when it happens, and for some reason this isn't happening here.

So I'm confused... if Sheridan returns today or at some point the rest of the week and is there for the rest of the run, are people going to be saying every single performance "yeah, but I bet she won't make it to the end of the run". And if she does, will people be saying "yeah, but remember when she missed those two performances and the understudy had a chance to go on?". She isn't gonna win either way.

That is one HUGE generalisation on people's behaviour right there!
To quote myself from earlier in the thread, I hope she goes back, doesn't miss another one and smashes it out of the park every performance. And makes a statement as to why she missed the performances she did. People might then applaud her work ethic and her classy response to a situation she has so far acquitted herself very badly in.

I didn't mean to speak on behalf of everyone, I was speaking on behalf of a lot of people. If you read back the past few pages, there is a lot of "I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't finish the run" etc... I apologise to you personally if you felt offended by what I said and I realise you are one of the supportive ones.

They should give her a week off and then she can come back refreshed and ready for work. I read on The Sun thag insiders don't think she'll last until the end of May. I think she will last way past then, she's strong. Wonder if she'll be on tonight? If she did leave then they would have to replace her with someone else?

Well there is one actress on tour who has already publicly announced she has cancer, so guessing you are referring to another one?

If she did leave then they would have to replace her with someone else? Nah, they'll just get the stage manager to read in the lines until the end of the run. Either that or just scrap the role entirely. Fanny Bryce just gets in the way of the show for me anyway.

You can find articles online where they quote "insiders" that are actually word for word posts from apparently 'in the know' posts from here....

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1524433/Stephen-Frys-stage-fright-took-him-to-the-brink-of-suicide.htmlI'm not saying Sheridan has stage fright, I think she has issues that are compounded with the diagnosis of her beloved Dad. I'm really hopeful that it'll all come right and we will see Sheridans Fanny to the end. *edited to add - A good friend of mine and her husband saw the matinee on Saturday and were blown away by Sheridan's performance, the extreme emotion she shows on stage throughout. We met for drinks afterwards (I was off to Sunset last performance, they were dining at the Savoy - her birthday treat). They were full of praise*

This thread is starting to get a bit viral on the board. I love Sheridan and have been a very long term fan. I hope she gets herself sorted and comes back and shows the knockers just how good she is.
No idea what her management is doing but feel it should be a lot more in terms of protecting here and ensuring she has the right people around her. Noticed reference to Pete Doherty earlier in this thread. Good example there of how his management have ensured he is in a good place for recent Libertines tour and starting today a solo tour. Brought in someone who 'looks after' him 24 hours ensuring nothing or no one gets chance to push back into old habits. Part of this is simply ensuring that the guy knows that he is 'loved' - simple as that.
I've worked with a singer for last 11 years who has been an addict and alcoholic for last 20. Thanks to wife and daughter in recent years he has now been over 2 years clean - knows he is loved and producing some of his best work ever.
When someone is in a bad place the media love it as they know they can go for the kill. I like to think we are better than the media. Yes, we expect performers to rise above the situation, to act professionally and not let the fans down. But none of us are the same. Some are strong and others are much weaker. We're all Beautiful Human Persons though.

Sheridan Smith may feel she is getting unwanted attention, or comments she feels are unjustified or bruising to her ego, but that doesn't make it bullying. Every negative comment is not immediately "bullying". This is one of the problems we have with tackling bullying, generally - in schools, in workplaces, on social media. People don't recognise it when it is happening. Yes, actually, constantly picking on someone with jibes, insinuations and insults *is* bullying. Particularly when it's a group of people targetting an individual. Anyone who has experienced it will know that it's the constant drip, drip, drip of it that wears you down and *makes* you insecure and hyper-sensitive, to the point that you react to things you'd normally be able to ignore or brush off. Any individual instance by any individual person seems trivial to outsiders, but is experienced by the victim as part of an ongoing campaign. It's only when you look at it as a whole that you realise the extent of it. It's a horrible, horrible thing to experience because you know the people doing it have got inside your head. The press are particularly good at it - they pick, pick, pick away at people until they react, and then gleefully run stories about their reaction. Did anyone watch the documentary about Amy Winehouse that came out last year? That was particularly effective at demonstrating it - by simply editing together a sequence of all the people making Amy the butt of their jokes at a point in her life when she was extremely vulnerable. It made for extremely uncomfortable viewing.

No, you're not making light of it, you're just suggesting that the problem is a trivial insecurity rather than a serious health crisis in the family in addition to a press pile-on. Oh, and that she should give up her beloved career. Not light at all, that, in fact it's rather serious to suggest that someone give up the career they've worked towards their entire life because they've missed a couple of shows and said some unwise things on Twitter. Clearly Sheridan can deal with her normal levels of performer insecurity, which is how she is capable of performing so brilliantly, so frequently, over such a wide range of projects.

the next news article on this will be that she's left the production.
Are they doing refunds/exchanges for people who booked to see her? She's above the title isn't she?

It may have been uncomfortable viewing, but that is the effect of editing. And "feeling" bullied is not the same as "being" bullied. Most people who are tweeting on this subject, are also commenting on dozens, if not hundreds of other topics. They are not systematically targeting Ms Smith for special treatment. The newspapers are not singling her out. She is one of any number of celebrities on whom they are reporting. Again, she may feel like the world is against her, but that is an egocentric perspective. There is no conspiracy, there have been no secret plans laid to single her out. Indeed most people were ecstatic with excitement at the prospect of her taking on this role- she seemed a perfect casting choice. If she has made mistakes, what she is objecting to is everybody else noticing them. They didn't set her up to fail. They just aren't swallowing the narrative she would like us to believe. Again, not bullying.
