I too was there last night and for me personally witnessed one of the most amazing performances I've had the pleasure of seeing on stage. I'm sure I'll face some backlash but for me Sheridan Smith put in a performance that is up there with Imelda's Gypsy. Having never seen the film I went in blind apart knowing the 2 most well known songs. I was captivated from start to end and the time just flew by. Also liked that I got given the title to hold. The whole cast is great and are putting their all into it on what was a 2 show day with very little time between. Darius has a great voice and I think his acting worked well as the charming lothario. As previously mentioned Sheridan did appear very emotional especially during the curtain call. Maybe we are all reading too much into it. She seemed genuinely touched and humbled at the standing ovation she received. As much as I would love to see this again I can't help but feel something will be lost in its transfer to the Savoy. Was worth staying up to midnight to get the tickets and is an experience I will remember for a very long time. Well done to the Menier for another great show. I think I remember you. With a beard?? I've never seen a board member in real life before! |

He then disclosed that he had been advised that his row C seat for "Mrs Henderson Presents" next week was going to be in the front row, and that he was delighted. He won't be delighted anymore when he finds out how cramped the legroom actually is. Show has finished 30min ago and my legs are still hurting - and I'm only 5'10". |

I was also at the matinee this afternoon.
I was in A7.
The lady next to me A6 got to hold the rifle and my knee was touched by Fanny Brice.
Loved it, that includes the production and knee touching.

Went last night. Sheridan Smith excelled, as I usually finds she does, but the piece is slight, isn't it? Not enough plot to hold my interest and not enough good tunes. Haven't been to the Menier in a while so I'd forgotten that they never have anyone working the bar until it's too late, and that walking through a tunnel made up of scaffolding poles with blackout curtains to get to the auditorium. The stage looked too squished, too elongated, with some very tall actors seeming too big for the space ("Hit me baby one more... click... click... time!") and the view from the ends of the front rows looked uncomfortably at an angle. I've felt more and more that some of the musicals they put on there are like try-outs for the main run in a West End theatre. The thing is, it often pays to leave it until the West End run, where it looks better and is far cheaper. (Close to You cost me £10 for a seat on Lastminute and I was allocated second row of the stalls...)

I've double booked myself and have a ticket for the final matinee at the Menier which I can no longer use. I don't have the ticket as I chose to collect at the box office. Does anyone know if they will try to resell it for me?

Completely understandable that she needs to be with her Dad. I have tickets for Saturday's closing night performance but wouldn't think of causing a stink. So, we get to see an understudy. Hardly the end of the world.

Sherian said via twitter that she'll get tickets (and back stage passes in some cases) for the Savoy run for people who want them - incredible gesture if she is allowed to follow through with it. And just awful news to receive, so her choice to take time off from the show is completely understandable.

Social media can be a very double edged sword as Sheridan Smith must know only too well. It can be very supportive and a great way to connect with fans but on the other hand some people hiding behind anonymity can be vitriolic. Stephen Fry has left Twitter (yet again) because of this. I would always take the view that if you would not say it to a persons face you shouldn't say it at all - let alone on social media.
Sheridan gives a wonderful performance in Funny Girl and it must be gruelling work 8 shows a week knowing the show hangs on you. She has a busy schedule filming between the runs at the Menier and the Savoy as well so this sad news must be very difficult at this busy time.

If she's in a state (understandably) then not going on is the right thing to do. Why anyone would wish to see someone trying to perform under such circumstances is a mystery. The Twitter thing is also a mystery.

Although this is a lovely gesture, I think she's setting a dangerous precedent by personally making such promises. |

She's back tonight according to her latest tweets. Offering to buy people tickets (in once case even train tickets from Leeds!) for the Savoy run is a lovely gesture but she definitely shouldn't have to offer anything. No offence to those who accept her offer but personally I just couldn't knowing what she is going through.

Going through Smith's Twitter feed right now is something else, do people have no sense of proportion or shame? Why would you think it's acceptable to send her a message about how her personal tragedy has effected you?

I really hope that she's not being pressurised into anything! When things like this happen it is up to any employer to be empathetic at the very least, and if they've given her the 'millions are riding on this' speech she should absolutely walk out on their production. You only get one Dad, and she should be allowed to lavish as much time on him as she needs without being guilt tripped.

Hate some people.. What is more important, yous seeing one actress in a role, or the health of her family..
Oh, and when I saw Funny Girl Sheridan was off sick, and yes the first five minutes I was disappointed as I booked mainly for her, but Natasha was amazing, so although it might be a pity missing someone, you might also can get really surprised.

Sheridan Smith may be famous, but she is a person. Her father is sick. I literally cannot understand the kind of person you would have to be to think that she's somehow doing you a disservice by missing a show to deal with this news. She owes nobody anything.
And of course, she offers reimbursement to one person so all the selfish pricks come out of the woodwork. Sometimes I despair. |
