It’s great for Francesa to get to go on as Joanne but I don’t envy her with Patti’s shoes to fill! There will be many a dissapointed gay in that audience tonight!

Going all the way back to the subject of the production/set design, anyone paid any attention to the framing of this production?
All the rooms that roll in and out are bordered with LED, framing the scene up, lit in a complimentary color to the scene.
Not only the trucks though, the entire stage is framed with the same LED bars around the proscenium. Maybe I'm overthinking it but to me this frame could be interpreted as a window that we, the audience, are observing each scene through.
Anyone any thoughts?

the entire stage is framed with the same LED bars around the proscenium. Maybe I'm overthinking it but to me this frame could be interpreted as a window and we, the audience, are observing each scene through I took it partly as a tribute to the original set, that looked a bit like "Celebrity Squares" ("Hollywood Squares" to Americans) but mostly that her life was a series of boxes and compartments and that she flowed between them. Oh wow! Yes. Looking at pictures of the original online now, there is definitely a visual reference to the 1970 production in the current production design. |

I went into it hoping she'd be amazing but I'm afraid I thought her performance was largely very flat. No denying she can sing though. |

Patti is the only thing in this production that is truly irreplaceable. We've already seen the show works (and works very very well) with a great lead understudy...and I think the material speaks for itself for all the other supporting characters (as much as we all love Getting Married Today - I think there are other competent performers who could pull off a decent job. But Patti has hilarious comic timing, star presence and a killer voice. Plus, she is practically playing herself. Good luck finding anyone who can top that.

I think the expectation around Patti is so high that it's easy to say she's just doing what she usually does. Maybe... but, if that's the case, what she "usually does" is utterly exceptional. LWL is the very definition of a showstopper. I had never seen Patti perform live before but I felt honoured to witness her sing that song. Goosebumps! I also think she's fantastic throughout. She makes the gentle, predictable humour of "The Little Things You Do..." laugh out loud funny thanks to excellent timing and she has an unbelievable presence in the group numbers without completing dominating. Sometimes I catch her looking and looking I just look right back. |

Having seen the show in previews and much more recently Patti's performance as Joanne has evolved. I can see why some of those who saw it earlier may not have been as won over as those who have been more recently.

I think Patti does very well in this production and particularly contributes some nice touches in the songs where she is among the ensemble. That said, many people rightly go into the show predisposed to value La Lupone and bask in the aura of her star power.
Having seen a half-dozen different productions of Company, I think many strong performers could pull off a performance of Joanne that would rival what Patti does. Part of Sondheim's genius is that it is very, very difficult to not have a song like Ladies Who Lunch be a showstopper.

Well, each to their own - I certainly won't be joining the Patti worshipping, but it would be a boring world if we all had the same opinions!
My indifference is probably just as much the piece as the performances though, the show didn't gel with me at all and just left me feeling a bit depressed! I half expected it, I'm not a huge Sondheim fan anyway.
