I was hoping for a starrey cast (pun intended), as the Donmar is such a prestigious theatre and usually attracts big names but doesn't seem to be the case with this show. Ah well at least I didn't pay a lot for my tickets! Sheridan Smith and Biggins?

Ah well at least I didn't pay a lot for my tickets! the material is so hard I imagine it’s hard to find celebs that can do it. Am personally quite excited by the idea of it not being names — much like the original off-Broadway. Josh Groban not a name? He made the show on Broadway.

And also Pierre is probably the one role you could stunt cast because he actually doesn’t do that much…

I was going to write something along the lines of "does the UK have someone similar to Josh Groban, who has his own singing career and fills big venues but also dips his toe into musical theatre from time to time" and Boe / Ball were the only ones who came to mind, so I thought "God, nah" and dismissed my post That said... they badly needed Groban to try and fill a big Broadway theatre at Broadway prices, but the show had gone that far without a starry cast. I'd assume it would be similar if the Donmar version decided to do a West End transfer into a big house that would need to be overhauled and thus make a lot of money. If the names bandied around for the Donmar are right, I'd say it's a fine cast of genuine MT performers and I look forward to seeing them in these parts.

Groaban has real talent. Ball has something but his ego gets in the way Boe, meh!
If this was to transfer into a big theatre it would need a name as its not hyped up like Hamilton (yet!). Or perhaps just a short run in a normal size theatre would suffice a la Next to normal.

And as the run has sold out and money is already in the bank they could actually get a load of construction workers who can't sing or act and it wouldn't make any difference to them.

Weirdly....underwhelmed with this cast. Yes, same. And it's absolutely not about starriness. It's about the blandness of a lot of them, especially the men.

Can't wait to hear Cedric Neal riff his way around every melody in the score.

Declan Bennett was the rather underwhelming Billy Bigelow at OAT’s Carousel wasn’t he?

I can't place any of the female cast but I'm happy with Cedric, Declan and Jamie. Cedric performed in the disco Proms recently. His performance wasn't remotely camp! I loved it.

Weirdly....underwhelmed with this cast. Same!? Individually great but collectively feels beige and unexciting.

So the whole run is sold out. Any Donmar regulars know if there is any chance of any returns? I saw Next to Normal there twice, but booked as soon as booking opened and was too slow with this one. Any chance they'll extend the run? (I haven't seen their full schedule)

Declan Bennett was the rather underwhelming Billy Bigelow at OAT’s Carousel wasn’t he? Yes, but he was also very much miscast, I thought. Maybe it was meant to work for the Northern English setting of that version, but there was nothing magnetic about him that explained why Julie felt so attracted to him in the first place and then stuck with him. But lack of charisma is no problem for Pierre, I think, he mostly potters around removed from the plot and I'm sure Declan can belt out "Dust and Ashes" just fine. Charisma is needed for Anatole to explain Natasha's instant attraction to the rake and I think Muscato isn't a bad choice for that (he was also a better Billy in the recent concert, ironically).

If anyone knows or can figure out any of the cover orders, that would be great. Balaga has traditionally covered Pierre, so if they follow tradition Cedric will too; but I can't see anyone posting just yet.

I’d expect some tickets will become available.

Any chance they'll extend the run? (I haven't seen their full schedule) During the Next to normal run, it was relatively easy to snatch a return ticket or two if you logged on the Donmar website around 10 am when the box office opens each day. They put them back for sale first thing in the morning and if you have the time / patience / freedom to spend some time on their website at the right time, you can get lucky. Of course things may change if a show is particularly successful or there's a big mainstream name in the case (it would not have been so easy to snatch a ticket for Macbeth with David Tennant in the lead role!), but my feeling is that for this production something will become available at the last minute that way.
