Hmmm, didn't think much of the film, although that was not helped by seeing it on one of the worst cinema screens in the West End (the Odeon in Panton Street, I didn't know if it was supposed to be so murky looking or if it was just that the projectionist was pissed)- it was the beginning of Johnny Deep's slide into the hammy, do any old rubbish for the money rut he's been stuck in for the last 10 years or so.
Will wait for a few reviews before deciidng on seeing this.

Is this going to sell well in London? The story might attract but not sure how big Dominic Cooper in 2016.
TRH is so big but so expensive so hoping for comps/discounts.

He's not had any enormous breakouts yet (unless you count Mamma Mia!, which I'm not sure I would), but he has been steadily working in the US, what with his recurring role as Iron Man's dad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he's also about to be the (HORRENDOUSLY MISCAST) lead of the TV series Preacher. And there's the Warcraft film, which I suppose has the potential to be huge though the trailer is far from the greatest I've ever seen. I don't imagine this'll sell out, but I think it'll do okay. It'll discount, but it won't close early. Maybe.

It was co-produced by Out of Joint and the Royal Court and toured the UK in autumn 1994, in rep with The Man of Mode, both directed by Max Stafford Clark. Blasted played Upstairs in January 1995, so it may well be that The Libertine played its run Downstairs at the Royal Court in January 1995, after the Autmn 1994 tour. |

For some reason, I thought this teaser preview of 'The Libertine' might be of interest to a few of you: (Ahem, esp. Dominic Cooper fans.)
In terms of casting,they must be counting heavily on Cooper's appeal. Besides Jasper Britton, I don't think most of the other names will resonate (and aren't featured in the preview video.)

The Libertine is the very first show at the Theatre Royal Bath after the installation of the new audience seating.
So, any planned nudity can't be sufficiently exciting to trigger the release of bodily fluids as this would spoil the new seats.

Yes, I recall one droll interview with the high-minded actress who got her tits out for him in Piano/Forte who assured us he was an "eroticist" rather than just a dirty old man (that would be the audience). There is always a ready audience in UK for a middlebrow play with nudity - Steaming, Equus, Hitchcock Blonde etc. etc - as Terry has noticed to his advantage. |

Alfred Marks had an anecdote about appearing at the Windmill in the 1940s as The Sultan with his nude harem and so on ("to annoy the punters when the girls faced upstage I just used to look down at it"). One regular used to go frequently but could only afford the cheap seats so he had a special pair of glasses with very thick magnifying lenses made. Entering the theatre for the first time wearing these he fell down the stairs and broke his leg. (Note to Terry: good idea for a play ?). |
