Anyone else watching this? I'm enjoying it so far (halfway through). Matt Smith is making a good Prince Philip, and Alex Jennings is fantastic as the Duke of Windsor. Rather like the recent Victoria series, they obviously have to deal with the problem that we all know what's going to happen, but there's some very interesting bits of subplot, and it's beautifully shot.

I am! I'm loving it (only on episode 2) Matt Smith is brilliant though a bit unnerving as Phillip. Beautifully shot, you can certainty see where the money went! It's also from what I've seen well written as well.

I was tempted to write a post about a different TV show. I've been religiously watching The Young Pope (see what I did there?).
It's quite amazing, and Jude Law and the rest of the cast are killing it. It's more like The House of Cards but in the Vatican.

Yes, I was favourably surprised by it. Slinking home after my cancelled iHo matinee on Saturday, was stuck for something to do, and gave it a try. I liked it a lot, so much so that we'd finished the series by Sunday night. The acting is superb, well cast and you can see where the money was spent - some of the set pieces are breathtaking. But ultimately I come back to the acting, and some of the intimate 1:1s through the series were absolutely terrific. A positive vote from someone who doesn't consider themselves a royalist... now only 12 months to wait for Series 2...
Tried the first ep of the Young Pope, and wasn't so impressed. A bit self-consciously surrealist.... but enjoyed it on the whole, and will keep watching and see how it pans out.

I thought I'd wait some time to hear more reviews before adding this to my ever-growing list of TV to watch, but even though it's early days I've only heard great things about it. Also I did like Matt Smith in Dr. Who and John Lithgow in Dexter and Alex Jennings as Willy Wonka (although isn't he supposed to be in just one episode?) so I'll probably give it a go.
It's weird, I seem to have become a bit more of a royalist since seeing King Charles III last year!

I am absolutely loving this. The cast are fantastic, the production is wonderful and I'm hooked. Some of the scenes are so moving too - brilliant acting all round.I wish they would release a soundtrack as the music is gorgeous too. I'm up to about episode 6 and am so sad I've nearly finished it. I hope they hurry up with the next series. Interesting to read that they are going to change the actors playing The Queen and Prince Phillip every two series so that they are casting older actors as they age.

Oh this is just FABULOUS. Usually I am so picky with stuff, but I am finding this glorious! Well written, directed and acted. A real treat. Trying hard not to watch it all at once and make it last!

2 episodes in and about to watch another one tonight.
This is classy TV.
Really enjoying it. Wonderful cast and great acting. Beautifully filmed.
Everyone I know who is watching it is full of praise.

I loved this, watched the whole series at the weekend cos I have no self control. The cast is excellent, I thought Jared Harris in particular was wonderful as George VI. Really pleased that they are already filming the second series.

Loving season 2 so far. The production values are so strong, especially all the CGI work which is pretty seemless. Cast are almost perfect, my only doubt (same with season 1) is the queen mother
So much better than the soapy Victoria on ITV

I've just watched the first 7 episodes and after a slowish start, I am really enjoying it. I thought Jeremy Northam was excellent at Eden; he resembled him so much that at times I felt that I was watching the actual Prime Minister. I am not so sure about Anton Lesser as Harold Macmillan. I like Lesser as an actor but his voice is very distinctive and it's not Macmillan's voice. Prince Philip's foreign sojourn is too dragged out for my taste; the five months seem more like 15 months.
But things liven up with Matthew Goode as Tony Armstrong-Jones. I could never understand why so many women found Tony attractive but Matthew playing Tony, I definitively get. Episode 7 gets very raunchy especially with his girlfriend Jackie Chan, who he was dating at the same time as Princess Margaret. Tony was certainly imaginative with sex if this series is anything to go by; it's a case of "Every Which Way But Loose."
My favourite episode so far is Episode 5 when the Duke of Windsor seeks a role. Alex Jennings is superb as Windsor and I found it moving how the Queen tries to reconcile her Christian belief in forgiveness with more and more disclosures about Windsor's past. What an odious creature the Duke of Windsor was; including his dress sense.

I honestly prefer Victoria, but then I'm a sucker for big historical frocks and generally tales from further back.
When it comes to The Crown, it often feels more like a history lesson to me - as a non-Brit I know very little of the post-war decades and almost everything brought up in s2 so far like the Suez Crisis was completely unknown to me.
I also find myself looking forward to see what Olivia Colman will do with the part next season. I'm not keen on Claire Foy, but I think it is really not that I dislike the actress (she was excellent as Anne Boleyn before this) but simply that Elizabeth IS such an awkward constipated figure who I can't help thinking was unlucky in being the first-born. One wonders what kind of Queen Margaret would have been. I find her the far more compelling character and Vanessa Kirby is wonderful. I'm on ep6 so far and I can't wait for the Kennedy episode with Michael C Hall to come around.

Margaret would have been a mess, much like Harry these days. They are both great supporting characters where their fun loving ways can be seen as endearing, but for the responsibility of the top job...nope. They wouldn't be taken seriously. Plus Margaret especially loved the perks more than the responsibility
Watched the whole season over 3 days. Loved it, preferred it to the first season. Although the plummy accents did seem to almost become characaturish at times.
Not seeing what everyone loves about Matthew Goode.
I usually like more historical dramas too but my issue with Victoria is it feels almost fiction masquerading as historical drama. It doesn't have any sense of believability for me. And the cast are all pretty poor

Just started series 2. V moved by the Suez crisis events. I have a very early memory of the effect this had on my parents. My dad thought he would be called up for the army again for a full blown war in the Middle East. He was 35 and had served in WWII for six years. I can remember the fear. Nobody knows what conversations actually went on but I reckon they've got it pretty close. Nice performances.

Interesting that they have recast this now from 1964 onwards - the Queen was 38 then and Claire Foy is 34 and Princess Margaret was 34 then and Vanessa Kirby is 30/31 they have been replaced by 44 year old Olivia Coleman as the Queen and 52 year old Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret. Olivia and Helena are the right ages to play Margaret and the Queen in the 1970's but maybe as old as Vanessa and Claire were a bit young for 1960's.
It must be interesting when a decision is made to recast a role due to the subject ageing especially when Claire has won many major awards for the role.
