Anyone else see this last night? Have to say that while it was oh-so Disney, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Aladdin performances all seemed much better in isolation than they did when I saw it on stage too. The main cast were all very good too and sang the s**t out of the songs. Ashley Brown got the majority of the well known numbers, and have to say I was surprised how good she was.

I was there and despite Josh Stricklands's facial expressions, vocally he wAs pretty strong.
Given that it's never played here I was surprised how long the AIDA suite was. I love My Strongest Suite.
I didn't know the King David songs.
I also thought that give the availability of the choir that the could have done much more with The Hunchback of Notre Dane.
Alan Menkin was a pleasant surprise.
Thoroughly enjoyable.

Agree about Strickland. Very strong voice but dear lord his face just wouldn't stay still.

I'm surprised Disney hasn't done more with King David since the original concert or even license it, it's such a gorgeous score.

I have, I am sure a cd of King David and it was written by Tim Rice and Alan Menken mid/late nineties? The two songs you quoted are the last two on the CD and in the show. I think it was only performed once as a concert production.
We all know Disney love children because they make money! They are not worried about noise in a show as long as it is full of children and parents buying. I really wish they would have the guts to stand up and do a show or shows that are not really for children. Let them try as we have been saying with "Hunchback" and now "King David" has re-appeared in this show - if it "wasn't" good enough why put it in the show? Perhaps Alan Menken suggested it?? It has some pretty good music on it. So put an age limit on it, you have the money to do it - try it they may have a big hit on your hands - after all they did it with "Aida" a hit in the States and Europe. Wasn't there some mention " it will not go in the UK" along the line I seem to remember??

Didn't Mary Poppins first have an age limit when it first opened in London...I remember it being on the news with people complaining that young kids should be allowed into a Disney show.
Then all of a sudden the age limit was away.
So obviously Disney arent interested in doing shows for a more mature audience.

Yes that was added by Disney. They felt the scene where the toys attacked the kids for breaking them up was too extreme for the kids in the US! So it was put on all productions. Think Cam Mac got it changed. That scene was too extreme for kids in the States and they let kids shoot guns!!
Poor kids being frightened.
Well as I said "Aida" was a more adult show and there were hardly any kids in to see Aida when I saw it.

Just watching the Sky Arts broadcast of it. Josh Strickland - his voice isn't coming over well on the broadcast - his diction seems non-existent. And his physical performance is just massively distracting. Gurning and leaping all over the place - horrid. He is really making it hard to carry on watching.

Agree that Mr Stricklands gurning is off putting on tv.
I'm up to the Aida section and had forgotten how much I love this score. They missed an opportunity to do something fantastic with that choir and 'The Gods Love Nubia' though.

Josh Stricklands voice was horrible!
Ashley Brown however singing Feed the Birds might just be my favourite version of that .. ever. She sounded truly glorious.

I'm about half way through watching this and am absolutely loving it so far. Just a few thoughts so far:
I agree with the comments on Josh Strickland - slightly uncomfortable to watch but his voice is ok.
I hated The Lion King when I saw it but it came across really well in this context I thought. Even though I really didn't enjoy the show/production I can't deny that it has some brilliant music.
I'd totally forgotten how much I love the music from Aida. I really must dig it out and give it another listen.
Ashley Brown is a revelation to me - I've never heard her before this. I might be a bit controversial in saying this but I thought she completely outshone Scarlett Strallen in the Mary Poppins section. Feed the Birds was just one of the most perfect versions of it I've heard - and I don't know why but it always makes me a bit teary for some reason.
Looking forward to watching the rest of it.

Was at the Albert Hall on the night and I couldn't agree more that having a choir of that size was wasted by not doing "Someday" (Berlin version) or other Hunchback material; epecially as so much of the evening was given over to songs few in the audience would be familiar with from shows that have never played in the UK. That said I would have loved more from King David ("Sheer Perfection" for starters) and Newsies ("Carrying The Banner" + "Seize The Day" - film versions) - being a massive Menken fanboy.
Ashley Brown stole the show for me handsdown. And maybe Joss Strickland came across as being taller (and broader) on tv - cause a mild breeze looked like it would have floored him on that stage.
Incidentally I was working FoH at the Lyceum when Lion King opened and chatted with Tim Rice about King David - when he was hopeful of the concert being staged in London. Flash forward 17 years. Still waiting.

Just watched it on tv.. good god Strickland is creepy with those facial expressions. He sings like a girl too. I never wish to hear of him again.

Caught up with this, and was distinctly underwhelmed, apart from the dual Mary Poppinses and the Aladdin finale. What a dull show, and the songs from Aida do nothing for me.
