4 Stars - Treneman in The Times, she actually seemed to like something for a change.

Well, the critics have been starved for a while... Quite a bit of overlooking the faults going on, or is it me?

Hey Quentin Letts God bless his lace socks, has put a new spin and take on Follies, that no one else has noticed - that theatre that is set to be domolished isafter all set to be an office block!!! Silly me and similar posters on here, thinking it was going to be a new Lidl.

Much as I wholly disagree with these reviews, what does it matter? The show is sold out and will not transfer. Quentin Letts really is a poor reviewer though - to call the faded opera singer a "hoofer" is rather pathetic and Billington's day is clearly over. I had to snigger at his comment about Imelda's voice dissolving at the end of Losing My Mind - it's because she can't sing it!!!! I have been rather pleased to see some posters here agreeing with my previous comments though which I had thought would be very unpopular.

I'm sure on one recording I have Weismann says it's going to be turned into a car park or car lot? Hopefully one of our Sondheim experts can put me right.

Having seen the 1987 version twelve (yes 12) times as a callow youth with the same obsessions as others now posting on this board, it was flawed but fabulous. Diana Rigg did indeed dance in "Who's That Woman?" but a back injury put her out of the number later in the run. Her costume and wig were also softened. Special mention for Julia McKenzie's Sally who broke my heart on every occasion; she was amazingly consistent and vocally stunning live. Kathryn Evans deserved a better production but she comes a very close second and gave a nuanced performance (and is a great dancer too!) and Mary Millar in Kerryson's Leicester production was also superb. (Liz Izen played young Sally and is now in the RNT version - perhaps she is covering Imelda?) The Landor version was a wonder and extremely well cast; there was a "pro-am" version in Northampton (with the late Louise Plowright and Alex Giannini) and I even went to Madrid to see it done in Spanish! I am nervous about my forthcoming visit and cannot help take my baggage and casting doubts with me. We shall see.

Sorry for sending the above quote, I was trying to refer to it in a post. This article states that the European premier of Follies was in 1985 at the Wythenshawe Forum, Manchester , with Mary Millar as Sally, Paul Kerryson as choreographer . I wanted to ask if they also did this in Leicester ? www.folliesbroadway.com/wythenshawe.htm

Congratulations to the cast on getting such positive reviews. Can't wait to see it now. Only just over a week to go. Me too! Next Friday. I can't remember anticipating a show more. Taking a friend who I'm a tad concerned about - he doesn't know anything about Sondheim, but hey ho, this is my night!

I'd love to see the justification for Frank's comment: "Overall it is undercast, poorly sung, badly directed, staged and lit", and westendwendy's subsequent complete agreement.
Because I really, really, don't get it. It makes me think of the commenters on YouTube who are really negative about the singing in Sam Mendes' superlative production of Company from 1996 at the Donmar Warehouse. That was beautifully acted AND sung, and I found the same with Follies at the NT.
The RAH concert semi-staged version had next to no acting, and was a disappointment for me from that point of view, despite the big name cast which had been persuaded to appear.
Anyway, I would like to echo the sentiment above - well done to all the cast and crew of this production of Follies on the positive reviews. You deserve them.

I almost never go to musicals so admit my ignorance (knew nothing about the show at all), but I really enjoyed this. The plot seems to go a bit skewwiff at Loveland and to make a big tonal jump, but the overall plot and acting is superb. The idea of these older people haunted by the ghosts of their younger selves. Gorgeous. Such an exciting feeling in the room last night.

It's not really up to you to need or get a justification of other people's opinions about something though - nor is it incumbent upon them to offer it. Even if more justification were offered, it wouldn't change the minds of people who disagree and would come down to personal tastes and a whole wealth of other reasons.
