She makes Geri Halliwell sound good. You sure you don't have misunderstood my post? It's a line from the song! Cynthia is incredible.

Now are these people who can't sing, or just people who's tone/style you dont like??
I think most of these people can sing, but it might not be the best voice, or a type of voice that appeals to me. In that instance, i would suggest Christine Andreas, who has the worst vibrato of any singer on broadway.

Russell Crowe, Sasha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp.
All the ones who keep turning up in Hollywood films of musicals!

Jason Donovan -- yet he still gets work!!! Wonder if he'll be in the Kylie Musical? Donovan really has good and bad shows. I think he can sing. I really liked him in Priscilla, The Rocky Horror show and both Parson Nathaniel and The Artilleryman in The War of the Worlds. On the flip side I couldn't stand him as Sweeney Todd, was a bit sh*t in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the less said about his Captain Von Crapp the better.

My list, focusing on exclusively stage performers and exclusively those who do musicals as a first job. It's too easy to take the **** out of bad singers like Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp etc because they are film stars first and foremost.
1. Jennifer Ellison. I just hate this woman and have a grudge. Absolutely talentless.
From 4:50. Just as bad in the show, except she wore a comedy wig.
Words fail me.

Hugh Jackman. Everything he does sounds like a parody, extremely unnatural, like he is imitating what he thinks Broadway should sound like, and taking the piss. Every note that is supposed to be soft, or with finesse, or filmic, or real/truthful, is a loud disingenuous trainwreck with him. Reaching for the backrow, even if there isn't one. Combined with very poor technique and abysmal timing of words and syllables. And last but not least, too long and fake vibrato on the exact wrong syllables, constantly, makes him the person this thread is about. I thought he was fantastic in Oklahoma, but I agree about the vibrato, it was awful in the Les Mis film.

I always think, when people complain about someone who 'can't sing', that they should listen to me attempt to carry a tune.
It's like when people say certain well-known actors are 'wooden' or 'can't act'. Hah, right, that person who has a successful acting career has managed to dupe every director who has ever cast them into thinking they can act, but you, random person on the Internet, you've seen right through them!!
Sorry, bit of a bugbear there....

Well, neither you nor I are paid for acting and/or singing, but they are, so I think it's perfectly fine to criticise them if you didn't like their performance.
(Just for the record: I can't sing, act or dance - let alone remember even the tiniest bit of a choreography)

Whereas I think it's fine to say "hey, that performance didn't work for me", but think it's not only ridiculous but also mean-spirited to say "WELL FACE FACTS THEY LITERALLY CANNOT ACT/SING EVEN THE TINIEST LITTLE BIT LET'S NAME AND SHAME". But hey, maybe that's just me.

Sorry, bit of a bugbear there.... But we are allowed an opinion, right? I mean, you're not expecting us to like everyone, are you? And no, it's not simply a case of "that didn't work for me"... If someone says, "I think that actor is wooden/that person sings badly..." then that's what they mean. Look at half the cast of Coronation Street. Anyone can see they're not the best actors. (Maybe that's why they've played it safe and stayed where they are for years and years, or maybe they left the cobbles hoping to get lots of work and- guess what?- they didn't!) Just watch the DVD of the Arena Jesus Christ Superstar, and listen to Tim Minchin. There must have been hundreds of potential Judases out there, who could sing the role far, far better... (Wasn't there some fuss afterwards that his performance had been tweaked for the DVD?) We're not comparing their acting and singing with our own, or what we can get at the local Am Dram. Of course they're going to better than that. But when we are paying, we are saying.

I'm loving this thread ...but I'm not taking it too seriously.
Are any casting directors reading this and crossing Hugh Jackman off their 'hot' lists? Doubt it ...but they might be smiling and wishing they could post anonymously on here.
Carry on, carry on

I think that there are just different levels of what is being considered as not being able to sing. I've seen people say numerous pop stars etc. can't sing when they very clearly can hold a tune. Even Sarah Harding - her voice isn't suited for big musical theatre numbers, no - but I dare say she can probably sing something that doesn't require big notes and sounds perfectly reasonable doing it. The problem with the question is that there are not two categories: being able to sing and not being able to sing. People can have unique, distinctive, grating voices but still be able to sing the right notes (Carlyss Peer in Groundhog Day comes to mind as a recent example). Some people can sing as long as the song isn't too demanding. Some people can't hit high notes or low notes. etc. etc. I personally don't think I've ever seen anyone live in a musical who I thought couldn't sing at all.
Acting is another kettle of fish. I've definitely seen people in musicals who I thought were plain bad actors who likely got hired on the merits of their voice.

snutte got what I meant.
The 'can't sing' of someone who has been cast in a professional musical is very different from my 'can't sing' - I can't carry a tune in a bucket!
Not every singer has the same range, power, timbre and technique, and by all means criticise them for that. Saying everyone who can't exactly hit a top note consistently or who lacks vibrato 'can't sing' makes the term meaningless.
I think my acting bugbear more relates to film actors, because I know full well that performances are constructed in the editing suite, and are as much about audience projection as what the actor is doing. You can totally change the audience's perception of an actor's performance with editing and music, not to mention the effect of typecasting. One of the pleasures of theatregoing is discovering some of those soap actors I'd written off as limited and uninteresting actually have range and talent - they just never got the chance to demonstrate that working on TV. You'd never guess what Nigel Harman is capable of from his work on Eastenders.
I've certainly seen singers on stage who were clearly cast for their voice rather than their acting range.

But I think you got what some of us meant too... Sure. Doesn't mean I shouldn't throw in a different perspective, does it? And I genuinely can't hear what some people complain about in certain performances. That could be down to my untrained ear or lack of singing ability, but I just don't hear the problem with Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean or Sheridan Smith's Fanny Brice. They sound good to me.

What do you think of Hugh in this? I love this track, love the whole album actually (thanx Babs ) but whilst loving it I do find his bit a little odd, almost uncomfortable to listen to. It sounds like a massive strain on his throat.
