What has happened to this? Only encores recently and they've nearly finished, nothing new announced. Is Rufus not such a fan as Hytner? Has it been really affecting audience numbers. I know there's been precious little worth transmitting lately but Ma Rainey and Les Blancs were both well reviewed and sold out and I would have thought ideal to give more exposure. Odd.

Part of the recent cost-cutting spate? Or maybe they're just saving up for bigger stuff; I'd be astonished if Angels in America doesn't make the leap, though can see it being something of a logistical nightmare.

Have there been any 'big' name actors/actresses in anything recently? I wouldn't thought there's a big demand at the cinema to see the sort of stuff they've had on over the last six months or so. I still can't understand why some of these haven't been released on blu-ray/dvd/on demand - I'm sure there'd be a demand for stuff like Frankenstein.

Contracts and royalties, innit. There's probably also an element of the idea of theatre being transient and impermanent feeding into the desire to make sure that even the filmed productions aren't available whenever people want them, but whenever the question has been asked before, it's usually been the royalties issue that's put a real dampener on things.

Surprising they haven't broadcast People, Places and Things, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Les Blancs or the upcoming Deep Blue Sea, Plough and the Stars and Chekhov trilogy. They've easily had enough critical hits but the season usually seems to start in September so still time for them to announce.

Admittedly that was one of the earlier NT live events, but the actors were cringing a bit at seeing their stage performances on film. I could see Amadeus get NT Live, it does seem plays that have sold out, have names or are known qualities get the NT live treatment and perhaps some sold poorly so the National are being selected of get picked to justify the cost

I met Danny Boyle a couple of years back and he seemed quite keen on the idea of a filmed Frankenstein when I asked him about the possibility (although maybe he was just being polite), although he did also say he didn't know how they would decide who would play Frankenstein and who would play the creature (he also mentioned being keen on putting on a Shakespeare production at a theatre, and that obviously hasn't come to anything (well not yet, anyway))

I've been wondering what's been happening too. People, Places and Things certainly deserved to get a broadcast with the transfer.
Hopefully this isn't the beginning of the end for the concept - so far as I could tell it was going from strength to strength.

The NT have recruited fairly reccently for something connected to NT live (I think editor or similar I forget...) so it's clearly still ongoing...maybe just not the 'right' productions and logtistics etc for a while?
Also I guess with other theatres also getting in on the act they have to be stategic about programming as well now in order to get cinema audiences?
I'd have bet on Amadeus being broadcast though, and as someone said above I'm betting Angels also (though that is adding a double logistical nightmare to an already logistical nightmare of a play!)

So presumably when the Globe or RSC do their dvds the royalties are part of the contractual process therefore they sell them? Now I think of it i can remember a whole section in the Covering McKellen book about money for the dvd and certain actors not wanting to be involved and recorded for posterity in a part that wasn't huge.
I'm sure I've also read/heard somewhere concerns from actors about how they would appear on screen, whether the acting would all look too big etc. compared to the subtleties you get on film, perhaps that is easier got past for a live broadcast but not so much if someone watches a dvd later? Frankly I'd buy some of them if they existed so it's a shame, there's the achieve I suppose if we really want to see them but you do have to be able to get to london again, any chance all that might go online one day?

On a costume tour at the National at the weekend the tour guide was explaining to us how they have to use a different mesh for the wigs for NT Live performances since the thicker mesh they usually use shows up on camera. He also mentioned how some of the costumes wouldn't work on camera. Clearly lots of things to be considered.

They could do a one week then then other I suppose? is that what they did with Frankenstein (for the reverse casting?) although then you have the added logistics of getting technical in twice...Angels might be a bit much of a an ask for NT live. But at least (finally) there will be an archive recording of it in the UK (there isn't of the original NT production) No Man's Land I'd say is a contender though. It's a shame more don't get recroded and that there aren't any DVD/Download versions there's been many I'd love to have to revisit.

Ah, my ticket isn't for the taped performance, I'm going in a couple of weeks! Just had a quick check and the taped performance date isn't on sale on Delfont Mackintosh, though if it's not already sold out, they may put some back on sale once they've figured out where all the cameras will go and where will be totally restricted etc. However, if you want to see the show on the cheap, there are £10 tickets in the Balcony if you search through some dates. Lots of completely sold out being at that price of course!

Could you actually see anything from those £10 seats at Wyndham's? Or are they a bit like £12 seats in Noel Coward where you have to stand to be able to see 3/4 of the stage?

I noticed something recently - NT Live is now sponsored "in the UK by Sky Arts".
Is that likely the start of some form of mechanism for release/broadcast/distribution?
