Don't think there's a thread for this already, so thought I'd make one. Concert performance of The Hired Man at Cadogan Hall on 22nd of September - cast led by John Owen-Jones and Jenna Russell, with Melvyn Bragg narrating. Still quite a few tickets left. www.cadoganhall.com/event/the-hired-man-160922/Hadn't heard of the show myself until I saw this advertised, and JOJ and Jenna Russell were enough to get me interested. Cadogan Hall seem to have quite a good reputation for these sorts of events, and apparently this includes 'stunning projections'. Should be interesting. |

EP played the opening number from this last week and it has me more than a little interested, although it already has me worried that some sort of 'Of Mice & Men' style shenanigans might occur. I should find a story synopsis somewhere really! 😀

I also listened to the EP number and liked what I heard. Love Jenna Russell too.
Have seen many concerts at cadogan and enjoyed them.
Going to give this one a go

Oh guys, please do go to see this. It is a staggering musical, heartbreaking and joyous, but heartbreaking, with a beautiful score. I never get tired of this show. It does deserve a big west end revival, or at the national, especially with the WWI acknowledgements. Yep Howard Goodall's score provides song after song of emotion.

I saw it at the Landor a few years ago & it did have me in tears in Act 2, but then I do cry easily. I would have liked to have gone to this concert but unfortunately I'm already going to a concert at Cadogan Hall the previous evening and I can't very well do 2 week nights running when I still have to be awake for work.

The Hired Man was on my list of top 5 shows! I think it has a wonderful score, very evocotive of the time and place. Thanks for letting us know it was on. Hope I can get along to see it, its a great cast.

I enjoyed hearing the score but I felt there was some weirdness with the sound balance where I was sitting - a few singers sounded pitchy (and I know they're not).
When it's fully presented as a show, does it have the role of the narrator? That felt a bit weird and stilted.

Just looked for a copy of this on Amazon and couldn't believe that the only one seemed to be £80!
(A friend was there last night, not knowing anything about the show beforehand, and loved it...)

The full show does not use a narrator, it has traditional book scenes. I presume last night was a replica of what they did at the Palace theatre years ago.
I beleive there are 3 recordings available, the OLC, the concert recording at the palace, and a recording of a small tour that went out a few years back.
The OLC was released as 1 disc, thoough they did record the full show over 2 discs. I have both discs of the OLC if anyone is interested in hearing it.

I loved it, but despite being a huge Russell fan I have to say she struggled. JOJ was superb as was Seadon-Young. I loved how when S-Y sang JOJ could be seen nodding in approval (and not in an acting kind of way)
