It seems after the success of the recent Jungle Book, Pete's Dragon and the yet to be released Beauty & The Beast that Arial, Sebastian, Flounder, Ursula, Prince Eric and all those merfolk living fathoms below are bound for the big screen again I simply LOVE The Little Mermaid so here's hoping the don't f**k it up! www.showfilmfirst.com/mermaid-live-action-remake/

Apparently Disney have banned impalement in their movies now, so they will have to find a new way to off Ursula!

I don't like The Little Mermaid but Alan Menken/Lin-Manuel Miranda co-writing songs sounds like a dream.

I LOVE The Little Mermaid, it's my favourite Disney film, and I can't imagine anyone better than Lin-Manuel Miranda to co-write songs. So excited for this!

Ursula is a great role to play so they should be able to find a great actress to play her.
I hope they bring this to London one day but I don't think they do as it didn't do that well on Broadway

Susan Sarandon might be good after Enchanted but I don't know if she could sing Poor Unfortunate Souls convincingly. I wonder how much they'll try and make her look like the cartoon or if they'll go with the stage version of Ursula.

Having seen Rebel Wilson sing Poor Unfortunate Souls on YouTube (when it was done at the Hollywood Bowl, I think) - she would be a possible - she has the presence and vocal chops to make it work

Apparently Disney have banned impalement in their movies now, so they will have to find a new way to off Ursula! Given this, I reckon (somehow) they'll change the story so after the linking of Flotsam and Jetsom someone will grab hold of the trident and shrivel Ursula down; 'rake her across the coals' as it were.

I saw the Pete's Dragon remake today (actually excellent- very heartfelt) and they showed the preview for the new Disney film Moana that The Rock as the male lead and has Lin-Manuel Miranda doing the music.

I'd say CZJ would be a good Ursula. She does bitchy very well, can hold a tune and would be the right age to be Ariel's aunt.
I'll take my agent fee now ta muchly.

Looks like they have found their Ariel:
At first I thought it was an odd choice, because of her color. Then I started to look up many clips of her.
She does have this certain quality in her voice that reminds me of the old Disney classics (Snow white, Cinderella, Ariel), and her type/balance between the sweetness and rebellious teenager seems to be fitting too.
All the previous options mentioned for the role didn't have any of that and sounded uninteresting to me. This could actually work.
I wonder how it would be if it had been the other way around, and for example, Sebastian would be played by a white dude. How would people react on that? That is a good way to check if people think in equality or not.
I also have to add that I think that the current blackwashing in films is getting extremely out of hand, and often feels forced, as if it's very obvious that the are better fitting candidates for a role out there, but I am objective and think in this case, the girl kind of fits the role, voice and type-wise.

I don't think this feels forced at all. She is *amazing*! She wouldn't have sprung to mind straight away, but I think she will do an amazing job, and of course posses everything Ariel is; 19, cute, sings and can hopefully swim....
This film is set in 1989 around the Caribbean- she fits the profile well.
So great to see someone get a big break! Was lucky to see her with her sister when I've seen Beyoncé a few times. Both are amazingly talented. They're signed by Beyoncé's label, under her management. Will be interesting what she does after this; whether she pursues with her sisters, or goes for acting!

This is no different than colourblind casting in theatre. If the character's race doesn't inform the character's decisions/experience/story then it doesn't matter and can be played by anyone. Ariel's race etc. doesn't have any impact on her as a character so I don't see why she shouldn't be played by a person of colour. I'm sure people are attached to her classic look but this is a remake and frankly it's nice to see one of the Disney remakes doing something different with the opportunity (for now the only one that sounds drastically different is Mulan though). I'd much rather these remakes do something new with the story than just hash out the same plot beats with a new lick of paint because then at least something vaguely original can come of them.

If they don't cast a fish as flounder I'll be outraged.
Also can this go in the General Thread as it's a movie with songs not a piece of Musical Theatre.

Feh at 'blackwashing'. Ariel lives on a Caribbean reef with a crab who sings Calypso - that she was a white skinned red haired woman in the original cartoon is what is weird.

Not sure how I feel about this one to be honest. I think it depends on how I look at this new film.
As a brand new film - absolutely fine. She has a beautiful singing voice and will look great as a mermaid.
As an adaptation of the original film - not so keen. She doesn't look like that Ariel. Find a shade of red that works for her and it'll help, though.
Of course, basically every option I've seen who does look like the original Ariel would have been a terrible, terrible choice. Some people on Twitter are saying it should have been Ariana Grande, and anything that avoids that as a possibility is a very good thing. At least this time they've cast someone who can sing without so much autotune that they sound like a 90s Cher song. Yes, I'm looking at you, Emma Watson.

Political correctness makes me yawn
How sh*tty to ponder to American politics for a Disney film Nobody wants to watch a Disney film and think about politics
This is about white American guilt
You just know they did not even consider a Latino/Asian American for this role
Diversity in Hollywood only extends to ret-conning characters as black or LGB

It's amazing how casting a white straight person is never a political act.

Take any existing poc Disney character and try cast a white person in it
Let's see how happy people are then
It absolutely works both ways

I bet there's more blue people in Disney animated films than black people.

> because you wouldn't get away with it, duh Take any existing poc Disney character and try cast a white person in it Let's see how happy people are then It absolutely works both ways Mulan, Tiana, Pocahontas are all informed as characters by their race and culture. What about Ariel is defined by how she looks? Nothing. So it's fine to cast someone of a different race. Only thing I'll agree with here is that it would be nice to have people of even less represented races be given these opportunities (there's no Disney Princess from Latin America for example) and of course this is all a business move from Disney but still if that's the way that minority groups get representation so be it. Ariel in the classic movie still exists and she'll always look like that there so it's nice to get something different from these remakes because otherwise what's the point of them?
