So after reading Daphne Du Maurier's novel I listened to the Austrian cast album today.
On a first listening I was very taken with the score. Some it is reminiscent of Maury Yeston's Titanic.
I am aware that the events behind the hindered Broadway production were as dramatic the show itself. I wonder if an English language production will ever happen. Would love to see it.

Probably not.
Too bad, I love the score and thought some of the staging were amazing. Some scenes are a snooze though. I saw it four times in Germany, last two outings were the last to shows. Pia Douwes as Mrs Danvers is one helleva exciting camp performance. Loved her.

I don't know, it relied very much on big scene sets, curtains wafting in open bay windows, the epic burning staircase at the end and whatnot... if you take away the dazzle, you are left with mediocre Europop music and a dull insipid female "heroine" written by a man with a mindset from decades ago. But who knows. I'd actually be interested in seeing an English-language production that might improve on the daft original lyrics.

I remember this was rumoured to be considered for the Shaftesbury Theatre, before the change of decision to take it to Broadway, which never even reached preview stages due to the money meddling drama which came to light.

Yes it was to open at the Shaftsbury, but they needed to dig a Billy Elliot style hole in the stage for the final scene, but the theatre had a high water table underneath it, so got pulled.
