Last night I had the pleasure of attending the book launch of How Sondheim Can Change Your Life by Richard Schoch at The Gatehouse in Highgate Village.
Although I was aware of it, I have never been to this venue. The pub itself was gorgeous! And the theatre, such a lovey, small and intimste space!
As part of the Sondheim Society, Richard Schoch was interviewed, discussing his book.
Joanna Riding opened singing I Know Things Now- she got the words wrong- lol!
Richard Schoch was a man who was not only quite knowledgeable in all things Sondheim, but well spoken. When asked a question, he took a second to listen, think and then respond. Coincidently, a man with whom I have ben corresponding with via Twitter.
As I was uncertain as to when I was going I actually arrived a little early and the moment he walked in, he introduced himself and shook my hand.
Very (very) interesting, he spoke about the shows Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Passion- touching upon Follies, Gypsy and Merrily We Roll Along- also about Sondheim himself.
In the audience was actor Gareth Snook and Tracie Bennett.
After a short break, Joanna Riding came back on and sang Every Day A Little Death/
Both Joanna Riding and Tracie Bennett were interviewed; Tracie Bennett about her time in Follies and Here We Are ad how she got to role in the show.
Joanna Riding about her time in A Little Night Music- her first Sondheim at The National with Judi Dench and her conversation with Sondheim about the character of Ann and her taking over from Imelda Staunton in Follies when it returned.
I genuinely felt so privileged to be there. The evening ended with Joanna Riding singing Here’s To The Ladies Who Lunch.
Finally, Richard Schoch signed my book.

That sounds lovley. Can you tell us how TB got the part in HWA ? She was great in it but im curious how she was the only Brit selected ? I don't know why was the only Brit but she auditioned like everyone else. She had to sent off a self tape and had to wait weeks- in fact so long that it had slipped her mind! And when the call came the director waffled on so long about his vision that she had ask if she'd got the role.
