The quasi-musical London Tide the first time I've been exposed to a situation were the majority of the cast could, basically, NOT sing.

Such an interesting thread, it really makes you think about what makes a show disappointing, is it just a bad show, or a good show with some mistakes made, etc.

Such an interesting thread, it really makes you think about what makes a show disappointing, is it just a bad show, or a good show with some mistakes made, etc. Expectations play a big role here. If we set ourselves up for something and it doesn't deliver that, we may see this as disappointing, "meh", when in reality it's still a good show, but we can't see it differently. I think that e.g. Hadestown being brought up here is such a case. It is a good show, maybe not everybody's favorite, but it's hard to say it's "bad". But it can easily be a disappointment if we expect a mindblowing theatre-changing experience.

Such an interesting thread, it really makes you think about what makes a show disappointing, is it just a bad show, or a good show with some mistakes made, etc. At risk of stating the bleedin obvious, surely disappointment in the context of seeing a musical or any kind of entertainment is dependent on what in the opinion of the individual is good or bad about it. There can be no absolute definitions of those terms because they are not facts but opinions based in the context here on one's expectation and emotional reaction to the show. To coin a phrase, one man's (person's) meat is another"s poison. As a specific example I go to most shows on my own but a friend joins me occasionally. We saw one particular show together on a Monday last year which was my sixth time seeing it. Friend just didn't get it and couldn't understand why it's so popular. He would definitely consider it a disappointing production. I've been back twice since.

Yes, that's why I love discussing shows on here.

Yes, that's why I love discussing shows on here. Agree though what I dislike is the negativity which seems to have become a far greater feature than it used to be. Presenting a negative view as a fact rather than opinion. This thread makes me feel good that I enjoy 99% of all the shows I see with no ifs or buts. Being non-critical and very easily pleased has its advantages. Delight not disappointment rules !!

Production wise. That awful Jason Donavan Rocky Horror, cheap and not in a good way. Jason was wrong in every way. One can’t leave without adding in Ghost The Musical, The Bodyguard and of course Back To The Future!

Expectations can definitely play a big part. I went to see SuperYou at Leicester Curve, primarily to see one of the cast. Went in expecting not to like it much as what I’d seen online looked like it wasn’t my kinda thing, a very cheesy American ‘dream big and you can do anything’ message piece. Which it kinda was, but I must have been in the right mood for it as I actually quite enjoyed it. Some of the songs are still rattling around my brain a couple of weeks later, which I think is always a sign of success with a musical.

My Neighbour Totoro. Granted, I went in totally blind, but it was like watching a show designed for a 6 year old, with no easter eggs for adults.

Half the time I was bored, the puppets were nice and the only reason I went to see it. The original film is only 1h 30m and they seem to have struggled trying to lengthen it with filler scenes and long silence that add nothing to the plot but to sell drinks at interval!

Mean Girls. Love the film and the score but left so cold by the London production, not least because of the awful projected set design.
Spies are Forever concert. Easily the worst and least funny musical I’ve ever had the misfortune of seeing. Utterly diabolical.
Special mentions to Mrs Doubtfire, Pretty Woman, Made in Dagenham, Berlusconi andRehab for being total wastes of time too.

Maybe controversial but come from away my partner and I both turned to each other at the end and couldn’t fathom why everyone was up on their feet …… 🤪 I was that bamboozled we went back a month later to give it another go but felt the same … meh 🫤
Jason Donovan in rocky horror at the Rep Birmingham early 90s strange take on Frank. Stumbling around on stage hunched over like in a drunken stupor or high
