Apparently Regent’s Park are currently auditioning for an ‘undisclosed project’ directed by Drew. They’re particularly interested in Scottish accents… heavily rumoured to be Brigadoon.

If this and Shucked are the two musicals next season I’ll be absolutely chuffed. Had really hoped they were doing Brigadoon this year, so I’ll cross my fingers!

Shame it's not Schmigadoon, that would be far more exciting.
I contacted their box office this week to ask about something and I mentioned Shucked, the assistant would neither confirm or deny it was coming next year. In fact, I got the impression he had never even heard of it.

Box Office staff are largely the last people to be told anything, and even if they did know they were hardly going to say 'yes it's happening' before the season announcement...

I've seen THRILLING productions of Brigadoon and I've seen snorefest productions, often dependant on the choreography. Hopefully with Drew at the helm this production would fall into the former category, it's an amazing venue for it!

This is a show I have never seen, is it any good? It is one of the greatest scores. Romantic, luscious, witty. The plot is very much a fairy tale and so you can't go in expecting gritty realism. But as a great romance with glorious melodies, it is absolutely a good show. Old fashioned. But good. |

Sure - I didn't see it so can't comment, I was commenting on the musicals he's directed which haven't been good, in comparison of the musicals he's choreographed which have been pretty universally great. |

One of the first musicals I ever saw on tv as a child. It's magical and the music is gorgeous with some hilarious comedy numbers. Would love to see a really good revival. Was hoping for a Lincoln Center Bartlett Sher revival.

The story is an old fashioned fairytale and so could feel dated but actually if you work with the quirky charm that comes with fantasy stories then it works just fine.
You can't change the fundamentals of the village that only appears once a century. And the original modern scenes work best with the time of creation as that is where the music sits.
So you can tweak the dialogue. But it doesn't, to my mind, need a radical overhaul.

Wouldn't Sunshine on Leith be a safer choice commercially these days? Don't get me wrong, Brigadoon is made for Regent's Park and I would be there should it happen.

It hardly flopped in Edinburgh or Chichester. Sold very well for both runs and received positive reviews. I agree, Local Hero did great business at Chichester. It's a great little show which I would love to come back. I do think on the other hand that it appeals to a very specific age group of audience and certainly wouldn't sell on a large scale. But, can Brigadoon sell well these days? I wouldn't say it's a household name with general audience members younger than 75 compared to the other hard hitters from it's era. |
