Chess, Danish tour cast. I always resort to Chess when I'm depressed about shows I love closing (in this case I'm getting depressed 3 weeks in advance). Do other people have this, one particular show they turn to when upset about other shows, or is it just me?

Chess is one of my go-to ones as well to cheer me up (weirdly as it's not that cheery) Like @theatremonkey I've also developed a fondness for Kinky Boots in the last year as a go-to-cheer-up. I also defer to Next to Normal if I need a bit of over-emotional investment. And currently I've been listening to Groundhog Day and cursing the theatre gods that it's been taken from me too soon (I may be being slightly dramatic)

I've looked for it for ages but can't find it anywhere (or only at some exorbitant price). Love the Gothenburg live concert version with Tommy Korberg.

Oh defiantly! Chess is one of my go-to ones as well to cheer me up (weirdly as it's not that cheery) I don't want cheerful music when I'm not cheerful, I want something angsty, & Chess fits that nicely. I find the line "I pray the days and nights in their endless, weary progression soon overwhelm my sad obsession" particularly relevent, though ny obsession problems are with shows rather than men! Groundhog Day's a good idea, plenty of existential angst, I may move onto that tonight.

I just put Groundhog Day on again, after listening to Hamilton a lot - it's kind of a weird experience listening to anything else after Hamilton! Everyone is singing so slowly...

Love the Gothenburg live concert version with Tommy Korberg. Yes. I don't have a CD copy. Even when I was trying to buy it back in about 2008 it was already out of print. I like it because it includes more music than the concept album or the OLC. Isn't the Gothenburg one in Swedish, or am I mixing it up with another recording?

Enjoying Lena Hall's "Obsessed: Hedwig". There aren't too many people in theatre with a genuine bone of rock & roll in their body, but she is very much the real deal, and it's quite something how well these songs stand up after 20 years. We're well overdue a London production. No surprises, just nice stripped down versions of great songs with a great singer. I changed my mind. I listened to this twice today and I have to say it's pretty gorgeous. I just needed to let go of my cast recording-trained ears and just go with these arrangements. Her Midnight Radio is heartbreaking. Though I fear serious vocal damage because she really lets it rip at the end. Quite beautiful though.

Midnight Radio always got me. My first experience with Hedwig was being taken by a gf to the cinema release in NYC: It was one of those times I've left a show moved, but unsure quite how - sad, but not sad. It's good to have to puzzle it all back together.
I think the Sugar Daddy's probably my standout so far from the EP. I found it perhaps a bit too slick on the Broadway.

I've moved on to American Psycho this evening. And I'm reminded that it's rarely a bad life choice. It is, as the kids might say 'a banger'*
*they probably wouldn't. I am not down with the kids.
Over Christmas I had a lot of Ball and Boe in my life as I bought Mum the CD...there's some weird choices on that most recent one but it sort of grows on you after a while.

I LOVE the AP soundtrack and thought the show was absolutely brilliant. I wasn't surprised that it didn't do the business on Broadway ( much too dark & cynical to pull in a large enough audience probably) but am gutted that the run here was so short and there's never been any talk of reviving it. I guess once Matt Smith's contract was up, that was that, but I'm sure there would have been other actors who could have managed his role with aplomb. Shame. It's definitely up there with my top ten shows in recent-ish memory.

Oh, and I've been listening to the Next to Normal soundtrack again a lot recently (another one in my top ten).

No the 1994 Chess in Concert with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is definitely in English. Tommy Korberg and Anders and Karin Glenmark are on it. There was a later studio version (2002?) sung in Swedish I think. I found the Danish Cast version on youtube and listened to the start of it last night. Can see why many recommend it as the recording to get. Very impressive performances.

If you haven't yet, I would recommend having a listen to 'The Band's Visit'. Such a beautiful score, and it's made me really curious to see the show!

I've just dug out Spring Awakening after falling down a Youtube rabbit hole and coming out on the Deaf West production on a talk show.
While i was there I also came across this, and if ever you show it to me and I don't end up a grinning but also sobbing mess I have probably died inside.

Don't even start me on Sunday in the Park with George (in a good way).
I have seen the PBS recording on DVD and listened to both cast recordings countless times.

I've listened to Fun Home today. Boy, I'll probably bawl my eyes out in July.

On the boring side beaucse it seems everyone is listening via social media, but The Greatest Showman is on repeat for me. As for musicals, Mrs. Henderson Presents and Cool Rider are current favourites of mine. Lovely to hear them again as both respectively were favourites of mine in their years.

‘Muriel’s Wedding’ what an instant cast recording- they need to release this one internationally- I now need this & ‘Waitress’ to come to the UK!!

I'm really into the cast recording of 'From Here To Eternity' at the moment. Fight the Fight is such a great song.

Today I listened to Next To Normal from beginning to end. It's such an eclectic score, but it all works together so well.
My favourite track isn't one of the big numbers, but 'I've Been' such a small but affecting song and i love the melody.
Hopefully we get a full production at some point.
